"The key to surviving a surgical internship is denial. We deny that we're tired, we deny that we're scared, we deny how badly we want to succeed. And most importantly, we deny that we're in denial. We only see what we want to see and believe what we want to believe, and it works. We lie to ourselves so much that after a while the lies start to seem like the truth. We deny so much that we can't recognise the truth right in front of our faces. Sometimes reality has a way of sneaking up on us and biting us in the ass. And when the dam bursts, all you can do is swim. The world of pretend is a cage, not a cocoon. We can only lie to ourselves for so long. We are tired, we are scared, denying it doesn't change the truth. Sooner or later we have to put aside our denial and face the world. Head on, guns blazing. De Nile. It's not just a river in Egypt, it's a freakin' ocean. So how do you keep from drowning in it?"
"in my dreams you'd say you need me"
Lucy sat at the bar at Joe's watching intently as Alex played darts. Alex turned around to see Lucy looking at him and smiled.
Joe gave Lucy her drink and she joined Meredith, Izzie and George at a table. "When I left Cristina she said she was okay", George said. "No one goes through what she went through and is totally over it by now", Izzie replied. "Maybe she is. Not everyone is like you, Iz", Lucy said. "She's too fine, she's cold"
"No, she's hardcore. She's got ice in her veins. She does what she has to to get through it"
"Cristina lost a baby and a fallopian tube and acts like she is totally fine and has no emotions, she is missing her soul"
"Then she's gonna make a great surgeon"
"Some people just keep their feelings to themselves", Meredith added.
"You have to be sharp today because Cristina is still unable to work", Bailey told the interns. "And Karev, see the chief by the end of the day". Meredith, George and Lucy shared confused looks. "Maybe he gave the chief syphilis", Lucy commented. The three laughed.
Bailey and the interns walked into a hospital room where the patient was recounting a story from her adventure in the Belizean jungle to a group of nurses and doctors. "Everyone, out of the room", Bailey said to the group of nurses and doctors. "I'm Kalpana Vera, I was named by villagers in Nepal, my parents are missionaries and I have travelled with them to many places", the patient said. Izzie and Lucy looked thoroughly impressed but Bailey gave them a reprimanding look. Izzie presented the patient. Burke's patient. "Kalpana has multiple episodes of syncope and ventricular arrhythmia- she has been passing out and having palpitations", Izzie explained. "When I was 8 years old, I was sent from Zambia to the US for treatment", Kalpana explained. "Stevens, what are the causes of ventricular arrhythmia?" Bailey asked Izzie. Before Izzie could answer, Cristina's voice was heard. She was at the door in a patient gown and with her IV. "Valvular disease, mitral valve prolapse, stimulants, drugs and metabolic abnormality", Cristina stated, grinning widely. Everyone stared at her in slight amusement. "Yang, leave", Bailey said.
"I'm fine"
"You better be in your room by the time we round on you"
Cristina began to leave the room irritated and disappointed. Her pink panties were exposed as she turned around. "Nice panties, Yang", Alex smirked. Lucy smacked his arm but ended up laughing with the other interns. Cristina closed the back of her gown. "In your dreams, evil spawn", she said.
Meredith presented Cristina to Bailey and the rest of the others. "I feel I am ready to go back to work", Cristina said. Cristina's mother Helen was in the room also. "Would she really be able to go back to work?" Helen asked.
"I'm fine, I swear. I am taking in solid food and my pain is controlled by the medicine I'm taking"
"The nurse said she had a fever earlier this morning"
