Chapter Seven

"Communication. It's the first thing we really learn in life. Funny thing is, once we grow up, learn our words and really start talking, the harder it becomes to know what to say. Or how to ask for what we really need. At the end of the day, there are some things you just can't help but talk about. Some things we just don't want to hear, and some things we say because we can't be silent any longer. Some things are more than what you say, they're what you do. Some things you say because there's no other choice. Some things you keep to yourself. And not too often, but every now and then, some things simply speak for themselves". 

"there may be something there that wasn't there before"

George, Izzie, Cristina and Lucy were standing together. "I think we need to do something about Meredith", George said. "Everyone is treating her like a zoo exhibit, like the rare panda everyone stares at". "Don't say it to her face, I think the panda died alone", Izzie commented. They all laughed. "What about you?" George asked Cristina. "If people knew about you and..." "Take it back", Cristina demanded.

"I won't. We should do something to cheer Meredith up". Izzie, Lucy and Cristina smiled at each other. "It's under control", Lucy smirked. "What's going on?" George asked. The three said nothing. Bailey came up from behind them. "Where's Dr Karev?" Bailey asked. "Probably off somewhere, deeply wallowing in self-pity", Lucy replied. They started walking. Cristina, Izzie, Lucy and Meredith fell a little behind George and Bailey. "We want to show you something after rounds", Cristina said to Meredith. Meredith didn't seem to be registering anything that Cristina was saying. "Mer, Meredith. Can you hear us?" Izzie said. "She's not deaf, Iz", Lucy said. They paused for a moment in front of the elevators. "Has she gone mental?" Lucy questioned. "I have not", Meredith replied. "Don't get assigned to a surgery", Cristina told her.

Cristina presented Mrs Kim Griswald to Bailey, Burke and the other interns. "She has a history of heart disease and has had multiple surgeries, she is currently here for a beating heart quadruple CABG surgery", Cristina explained. In the background, Mr Griswald was unpacking his wife's suitcase. Alex entered the room. "You're late", Lucy told him. "Dr Yang, why do we keep the heart beating?" Burke asked Cristina. Cristina looked at Izzie and Lucy. "I don't know", she said. "I have no idea". Burke looked at Bailey who looked very upset. "What?" she said. She looked at Izzie. "I don't know either", Izzie said. Then Lucy. "No clue", Lucy said. Meredith began to answer when Izzie hit her foot. "Anyone know?" Burke asked the room. Alex began to answer before being interrupted by Burke. "Dr O'Malley, since you didn't arrive late, do you have the answer?" he asked. "We would only immobilize the part of the heart we need to work on and leave the rest of the heart alone because it is so weak", George answered. Burke looked at the group with a confused expression. Burke handed George Mrs Griswald's chart. "Welcome to the case", Burke said, before leaving the room.

"Dr Bailey, Burke is punishing me for the elevator surgery I wasn't able to do", Alex complained. "No, she's punishing you because you were late for rounds", Bailey stated. "Unless, you're willing to tell me why you were late". Alex stayed silent.

Several feet away, Meredith, Cristina, Lucy and Izzie were standing together. They were whispering to each other but Lucy was too busy listening to the conversation between Alex and Bailey and wondering why Alex was so secretive about why he was late. "Dr Shepherd needs help on a nerve case", Bailey said to Alex. "I'm assigning you to the case". Alex walked away. Bailey focused her attention back on the girls. "Don't embarrass me in front of the attendings or I will make sure your hearts stop beating", Bailey said. "Sorry", they all said in unison before walking away. Bailey eyed them suspiciously.

"We found a case", Lucy said to Meredith. "You stole a case", Meredith said. "We borrowed it from psych", Cristina said. "It is totally unprecedented".
