"Forty years ago, the Beatles asked the world a simple question: they wanted to know where all the lonely people came from. My latest theory is that a great many of the lonely people come from hospitals. More precisely, the surgical wing of hospitals. As surgeons, we ignore our own needs so we can meet our patients' needs. We ignore our friends and families so we can save other peoples friends and families. Which means that, at the end of the day, all we really have is ourselves. And nothing in this world can make you feel more alone than that. Four hundred years ago, another well-known English guy had an opinion about being alone. John Donne. He thought we were never alone. Of course it was fancier when he said it. No man is an island entire unto himself. Boil down that island talk and he just meant that all anyone needs is someone to step in and let us know we're not alone. And who's to say that someone can't have four legs. Someone to play with, or run around with, or just hang out"
"i was an impossible case. no one ever could reach me but i think i can see in your face, there's a lot you can teach me"
At the hospital, George, Holly, Meredith, Izzie, Cristina and Lucy were watching quints. Each claimed that theirs was the best. Alex walked in. "Kate is the best", he claimed. "Lucy". She ignored him. "Can we talk?" Alex asked. "Why? There is nothing to talk about. Go screw your nurse. I don't care", Lucy replied. Alex left the room. "I am so glad I walked in on him screwing Olivia because now I can stop wasting my time on a guy who doesn't care", Lucy said. "But I mean, Olivia! Come on!" "I slept with Olivia", George said.
"Well, then, you both have bad taste"
"You can't say you weren't warned"
"Screw you, George. Be a fucking friend, god! You can't just be like "yeah, screw him!" You have to judge me?! You don't get to judge me, syph boy. Don't you dare judge me!"
The next morning, George, Lucy and Meredith walked into the locker room to find Cristina. "I want decent food", she lamented. "Go get some, then", Lucy replied. "Start eating breakfast", George suggested. "You sound like Burke", Cristina said. "Sometimes, I think, we'd be better off with dogs". "I'm over men", Meredith announced. "That makes two of us,'' Lucy said. "A dog isn't a replacement for a human", George commented.
"Who says?"
Alex walked in. "And some might say, what's the difference", Lucy said, glaring at Alex.
The interns followed Bailey into Karl Murphy's room, a man with multiple skin melanomas. George presented. "A biotherapeutic agent, or leeches", George suggested. "I have been a hiker for 40 years", Karl said. "There's nothing I've seen in nature that I haven't found a reason to love". "Are you a big outdoorsman?" Bailey asked.
"How do you think I got all these melanomas in the first place?"
Bailey and the interns walked in on Derek with a patient, Robert Martin. "Dr Shepherd, you're early", Bailey noted. "Robert had a small subdural hemorrhage", Meredith presented. "That was the problem", Derek said, looking pointedly at Alex. "The surgery was postponed because...", Meredith continued before trailing off. "I told a nurse", Alex started. "Olivia", Izzie added, which made Lucy smile at her. "To administer the wrong amount of hypertonic saline", Alex continued. "This dehydrated Robert's brain", Derek said,
"There's still a chance he could wake up. I know I screwed up but I want back on the case"
"There isn't much of a case left"
Dorie, Tom and Addison were watching the quintuplets. Bailey and the interns walked in. "We attempted surgery on Julia's omphalocele that could not be completed", Cristina said. "So another surgery will be done in a few days to finish pushing in the bowel". "Baby Lucy's brain shunt was put in yesterday", George explained. "We will monitor her closely", Holly said. "Burke used a catheter to open up Emily's atrial septum", Izzie said. "Today we will go back in and try to reconstruct her heart's left chamber". "Charlotte's lungs were underdeveloped", Meredith said. "So she has a special mask to help her breathe". "Kate is very healthy so far", Alex said. "We'll just keep her in the isolette until she reaches 4 pounds", Lucy said.
At the stairwell, Bailey approached Meredith and Lucy. "Grey, Shepherd, keep an eye on Dorie to make sure her hormones don't get the best of her", Bailey ordered. "I have a relationship with Dorie, therefore, I should be the one watching her", Izzie protested. "I don't know what you're so angry about", Bailey told Izzie. "But I don't care, and you better keep it to yourself. You interns are like preemies, you're not ready for the real world". Her pager went off. "Yang, pit, let's go", Bailey ordered and she and Yang ran off. Lucy eyed Izzie suspiciously before running off with Meredith.
George and Holly walked in on Olivia trying to put leeches on Karl's face. "I can't get them to bite", Olivia said. "The leeches might feel anxious from the bright lights", Holly explained. "Thunderstorms and nervous handlers". Olivia then dropped the leech. "Sorry", she said. "I get squeamish around leeches". "That is not what I heard", George retorted. Olivia handed the job over to George and left. "Real mature, George", Holly remarked before walking out.
Izzie was in the elevator when Lucy walked in. Lucy pressed the stop button. "I am only gonna ask you this once, and I want you to be honest with me", Lucy said. "Do you like Alex? Please don't lie to me, Iz". "I think so", Izzie replied quietly.
"Okay, then. Thank you"
"Why do you care? Do you like him?"
"I-uh, I mean, no, no I don't"
"That's very convincing"
"Shut up"
