"As doctors, we're trained to be skeptical, because our patients lie to us all the time. The rule is, every patient is a liar until proven honest. Lying is bad. Or so we are told constantly from birth-honesty is the best policy, the truth shall set you free, I chopped down the cherry tree, whatever. The fact is, lying is a necessity. We lie to ourselves because the truth, the truth freaking hurts. No matter how hard we try to ignore or deny it, eventually the lies fall away, whether we like it or not. But here's the truth about the truth: it hurts. So we lie"

"tell me there's a garden where my flowers will grow. maybe then all my starting will keep going. i hope so"

A rock guitarist had cut off three fingers, Derek, Cristina and Lucy worked on him. "You'll have to quit smoking to help your hand heal", Derek said to him. "I'm not a smoker", the patient denied. "You have yellow fingernails", Lucy pointed out.

"O'Malley, Kepner, there's an elderly patient, Sophie", Richard said. "Make sure she leaves the hospital". They entered the room. "I am Dr George O'Malley and this is Dr Holly Kepner", George greeted. "We were told to make sure you leave, m'am", Holly said. "I'm not going to a retirement home", Sophie said. "I'm waiting for my daughter to get a room at her house ready for me".

Lucy and Alex were dealing with a Japanese competitive eater who couldn't stop hiccuping. She didn't speak English so her coach was her translator.

At lunch, Alex, George, Cristina and Lucy had a hot dog eating contest which Cristina won. Afterwards, Holly ran to the bathroom to get sick.

After getting some unnecessary tests, Sophie was back in her room. "We're gonna have to call your daughter, m'am", Holly said.

"I kept my apartment and I haven't told Burke", Cristina told Lucy and Meredith. "Cristina, don't hold off on telling him, please. This is what's gonna cause the biggest fight of your relationship", Lucy begged.

George made up another potential illness for Sophie so she could stay for more tests.

Sophie's daughter showed up. "Why isn't she in the retirement home?" her daughter asked the doctors. "Doesn't she have a room at your house?" Holly asked.

"I have no idea what you're talking about"

"I don't want to go to a retirement home and grow old, Kepner", Sophie said. "M'am, you don't have to worry about anything. I promise", Holly replied.

Alex held an envelope in his hands when Lucy approached him. "Hey", he greeted. "Hey, what's that?" she asked, pointing at the envelope.

"My results. I can't open them"

"I will"

She grabbed the envelope and ripped it open. Her eyes scanned the paper and Alex began to get nervous. She put it down and patted his back. "Congratulations, evil spawn", she said before walking away. He smiled as he watched her walk away.

Addison and Lucy sat at the bar at Joe's. "So, Mark Sloan?" Lucy asked. "Seriously? Are you seriously bringing this up right now?" Addison asked.

"I want to know why"

"Why? There's no why, only mistakes"

"You've officially hit self-loathing drunk. I'm calling you a cab"

"Lucy, Meredith is so pretty, and young"

"Addie, don't go there. You don't want to go there. You're beautiful. Okay? You're beautiful"
