An hour after dawn, Adrik still sat in the hospital waiting-room with Marcello beside him. Both of them stayed and anticipated all night for Zeiden to regain consciousness. Adrik called Rosalie and told her what happened, like he promised that he would. Although, he was nervous when he had told her. He half expected her to freak out and shut the phone, but instead, she had calmly listened to him. Rosalie wished for his full recovery, so did Adrik deep down.
Isaiah, Lazarus, Ronin had all called Adrik to check on Zeiden again too. So, it was fair to say that Adrik didn't get a moment of rest all night. Dr. Stone, Dr. Avery and Dr. Kim came at separate times or sometimes together to check on Zeiden as well. They would walk into the room; monitor the screens; his vitals, and then inject something in the IV drip that was hooked onto Zeiden's arm. Dr. Stone changed the bandages around his head a few times, like she was right now.
The hospital was fairly quiet; no one made any noise this early in the morning. Nurses were changing shifts and visitors were either returning to work or going home.
Suddenly, Dr. Stone came out of the room and straight to Marcello. "Can I check your temperature?" she asked quietly.
Marcello tilted his head back, raking his hair away. "No," he told her sternly.
Dr. Stone looked in Adrik's direction. "Is he always such a hard-ass?" she remarked.
Adrik nodded and would've laughed like a normal person would. But he was too tense to show any expression.
Dr. Stone blatantly ignored Marcello's objection. She pulled out a thermometer and stuck the end of the small machine into his ear. When Marcello flinched at the contact and tried to move away, Dr. Stone grabbed his head and forced him to sit still. A moment later, the machine beeped and she pulled it out.
"Forty degrees. That's not good," she muttered.
"I said I'm fine," gritted out Marcello.
Dr. Stone passed the thermometer to a nurse that was walking by her. "I'm going to put you on some fluids to lower that temperature," she decided all on her own.
"I don't need it," said Marcello.
Adrik sighed. "Do you want to see Zeiden when he wakes up or not?" he asked bluntly, which definitely got a reaction out of Dr. Stone who didn't know about the mating bond. Well, now she did.
"Alright then," Dr. Stone smiled openly. "I'll have someone here in a few seconds." The pager in the pocket of her lab coat rang. She hastily left them again.
Marcello groaned and threw his head back.
"Stop being so dramatic," mumbled Adrik.
Marcello shot him a glare. "I'm not dramatic," he bit out.
"You have that in common with Zeiden," added Adrik, ignoring Marcello glower and comment.
Marcello sat up straight. "I didn't think we did have anything in common," he said. "Your cousin is very different from me."
Adrik remembered that day when Zeiden fought against Ivan Petrov to stop the hunting games. Zeiden really was unlike any of them. He stood up for what he wanted and didn't care who stood in his way. Adrik always thought that it was stupidity or naivety speaking in the pup. However, looking back now, it was bravery and full-fledged honour.
Dr. Kim came to them.
"How is he?" Adrik asked him.
"Zeiden's vitals are looking good," he answered. "Dr. Avery is with him right now. But Dr. Stone paged me to help you." Marcello looked up at Dr. Kim who had an IV fluid bag hooked onto a metal pole.
