Sliding down to take a moment to look at your body. You had a few cuts on your legs and side. 'Must have been from when I fought that zombie' You thought. Once the adrenalin rush calmed a bit you took in your surroundings. You were in a farmacy.
"Holy shit... Guess the gods love me" You chuckled as you stood to wander around the illes. It's been a long time since you had found one.
Most of the shelves were empty. People sometimes forget what kinds of things are necessities. At the start of the outbreak everything turned to shit. Masses were turned within seconds. People took this chaos as an opportunity, stealing tv's and other valuables in their minds. Robbing electronic and jewelry stores.
They somehow forgot that a necklace or a telephone is not going to protect you from a virus that turns you into a zombie. Also it was to no use as there was no power in the first place. The hero society didn't do a good job at protecting civilians either. As a matter of fact they all must be dead or zombies by now. They had this stupid plan of bringing every citicen to a safe place and evacuating the city. But bringing people together was their downfall.
You were knocked out of your thoughts as your eyes caught a glimpse of something.
"No way...." You said as you eyed a certain antibiotic laying on the shelf behind the counter. It was an anti-inflammatory. You quickly grabbed your backpack and put the stuff you found inside. In total you found a few bandages, toilet paper, band-aids, plastic gloves, the antibiotics and some packed nutrition powder that you have to mix with water in order to drink.
Not what you first came for but you were definitely not disappointed.
Your head jerked to your side as you heard something rustle from the room behind the cashier.
Grabbing your knife and flashlight you decided to take a look. "This better not get me killed, I did not survive for this long to get murdered by something this stupid" You said while slowely opening to door. It was a dark room. On instinct your hand reached for the light switch. 'right no power, still have to get used to that.' You scanned the room with your flashlight. Nothing really seemed out of the ordinary until you heard a click in the corner of the room.
You immediately shined your flashlight to where you heard the sound as your eyes met with the eyes of someone else.... holding a gun.
The light coming from the rest of the store was enough to show how the person holding you at gunpoint was doing. Raising your arms as a surrendering gesture you took a good look at him. He was sitting against the wall, clutching his side, blood seeping out. He looked exhausted. A pale face with Sunken eyes. Seeing another person was confusing. You spend so much time alone that this almost seemed surreal.
You were the first one to break the silence "Did you get bitten?"
"Does it even matter?" The guy said tears were pricking his eyes. Still holding you at gunpoint.
"Yes, I kind of don't want to die?" You said in a joking manner.
He chuckled. "We all die at some point."
"We do but I would like a more peaceful way" You said while taking a step closer. " Listen, I can he-"
"Don't" He said sternly stopping you in your tracks.
"Ok" You said in a defeated way. "But can you at least drop the gun, it's kind of unfair you know?" He did not lower the gun. You at least tried. Making a break for it sounded tempting but hoping it was a bluf that the gun was loaded was a risk you weren't willing to take
"What do you have in your backpack?" He asked shifting his gaze from you to the item on your back.
"Does it even matter? You're not going to make it with an injury like that." You stated.
"It's not very wise to show attitude to the one holding a gun" He said, clearly not liking his position. Pushing himself to sit more upright and wincing in pain while doing it, he eyed you, studying your body with drooping eyes. He was clearly at his final moments.
"It's not very wise to threaten a person that at this point is your only chance at surviving"
"You think I wanna survive?" He spat clearly angry. His arms began to shake as the strength started to vanish, becoming weaker every second.
"Not anymore, but I do....." You said. To get out of this situation you either had to convince him to let you go or to wait until he would die.
He could no longer keep his arm up without support so he used his knee to keep the gun pointed at you. It didn't really look like a comfortable position.
"You want to live in this shitty world? You want to keep fighting these monsters that took everything from me? They took my little girl.. These disgusting things took my entire family!" He almost yelled becoming more angry while tears streamed down his face. That wasn't a smart decision as you could hear the screams from the zombies trying to find you from outside the store.
"I'm sorry-"
"Are you?!"
"Yes I completely understand. They took my family too" You said trying to keep him calm hoping that showing remorse would somehow keep him from shooting you. Starting to hear the screaming get closer, your anxiety peeked. It was time to go.
"Then you wouldn't mind right?"
"What-" You couldn't even finish what you were saying as a strong wave of pain coursed through your body all at once. You fell backward onto the ground. "You mutherfucker" You spat. Heating in pain as you put pressure on your thigh to try and stop the wound from bleeding. He actually shot you. He looked at you, satisfied.
"I did you a fucking favor" He said now pointing the gun up under his chin.
"Be grateful" He said as another flash of light brightened up the small space you were in.
You didn't even hear the first time he shot a bullet but damn that thing was loud. With your other hand you covered your ear. Closing your eyes.
Mustering up the courage you looked up at the man immediately regretting your decision as you felt a wave of nausea flooding your brain. The wall was covered in a black liquid. indicating that he indeed was bitten.
Your clothing became the colour red. Hand covered in a warm thick substance demanding your attention.
"Shit.... Oh no no no....." you said as you realized how much trouble you were in. The sound and the light of this encounter was definitely going to attract more zombies your way. Shrinking your chances of getting out alive.
"So this is it huh?" You said chuckling still holding onto your leg that was bleeding at a much faster pace than you would like. "Never thought that something like this was going to take me out" You laughed that soon turned into a coughing fit. "Called it" You could feel yourself getting light-headed. You tried to resist the exhaustion you were feeling. You still hadn't completed your goal that had prevented you from giving up surviving in the first place. And that was finding your brother.
Him and you were separated while searching for useful equipment in a camping store when a horde of zombies flooded the place. You were forced to part ways with him.... and for some reason you couldn't find him anywhere. A part of you thought that he was turned but you couldn't and wouldn't accept that. You couldn't lose him.
Everything got hazy, your head dropped down, your vision blurred as you could feel the strength in your body disappearing.
You were ready to close your eyes as you felt a hand grabbing your chin forcing you to look up.....
