Chapter 2:

A tapping noise on the door brought me out of my thoughts.

"Enter," I shouted. This news better be good.

I sat up straight as one of the rogues I hired entered my chambers. He got down on one knee and prostrated before me with his gaze lowered to the floor as a sign of respect.

"Well? Do get on with it. I haven't the time or the patience for this." I snapped.

"Alerick sir" he began.

"That's King to you rogue" I yelled.

"Yes, my apologies your highness. Sir we tracked the girl you sent us after and killed her."

"That's great news. Now we can move on to 'Phase B',"

"Well sir that's not possible yet" he said while keeping his gaze on the floor

"And why not?" I said trying to control my anger

"Because sir that girl's blood wasn't a match. We killed the wrong girl."

"Well then go find the right girl and bring her to me. ALIVE!" I yelled as he scurried out of the room. How could I have been so foolish and sent them after the wrong girl? I will get this girl and when I do, I'm taking what's mine.

"Artemis, is that you?" my mom croaks into the phone.

"Yes mom it's me." I say sourly.

There was a pause before I decided to speak again.

"When were you going to tell me? Were you ever going to?"  I sighed into the phone.

"Honey," my mom says tiredly, "I wanted to tell you. Believe me, I did. But sweetie you already have so much going on and you have so much responsibility and I just don't want you to have to add me to your list of worries. You deserve to just be a young adult, go out with friends and have girl time. You already mother your brother and take care of me." She says sadly.

"Oh mama" I cry softly. "I will always worry about you. You work so hard and you do your best and now look what's happened."

"Dr. Honenburg told me you offered to be my donor"

"Yes of course I did. I didn't even have to think about that."

"Sweetie you don't need to do that for me"

"Yes I do mom. It's the least I can do," I challenged.

"Artemis, NO!" she shouted.

"Mom? Is there something you're not telling me? Why would this be a problem?"

"It's nothing dear. Just don't do it," she said before the line went dead.

I sat on the couch staring at the wall in front of me. What was that about? I wondered to myself. I made my way into the kitchen and got a glass of water. After that I woke Colton up and fed him then bathed him and now were sitting on my bed watching TV together.

"Mimi?" he calls.

"Yes care-bear," I say back.

"Is mommy going to be okay?" he asks quietly "I want mommy back." He cries.

"Oh baby" I say as I pull him into my arms. "Mommy needs you to be strong for her okay little man. She doesn't want us to worry about her. I'm not going to lie baby, I don't know if she's going to be okay or not but mommy is strong so she will fight this." I say and press a kiss to his head. "Lets get some sleep okay sweetie."
