And that's the reason why Ponyboy has those awful nightmares and suffers from a bit of PTSD.
And in the movie when he has that dream showing how his parents died....What if that's a flashback of him watching the car get hit by the train after he was able to get out?
I'm just theorizing it.
Imagine:
Ponyboy and his parents are in the car driving through the tracks and suddenly Ponyboys parents see the train hurling through about seconds close to hitting the car
"RUN PONYBOY GET OUT OF THE CAR!!!" His mother yelled.
Ponyboy quickly opened the door and ran for his life, not realizing his parents were still in the car, when he looks over...he sees the train smash through the car.
He was shocked, speechless.
*The reason how Pony survived was because he was on the side where the train wasn't hitting first and his parents knew he'd survive and they wouldn't*

Anyways after the situation happened Ponyboy is with the ambulance and stuff like that and he spots Darry and Sodapop running towards him, they hug eachother crying.
