Momma's gentle hands shook me to life. Groggily, I popped an eye open to stare at her. The room was filled with a dull purple light that filtered in through the drapery. She smiled at me calmly when she saw my eyes pop open to stare back at her.
"Dahlia," Momma spoke quietly, running a steady hand along my jawline, "It's time for us to leave. Everyone is already outside and the car is packed. We left you an outfit, hurry up and get ready, we're going to get breakfast. Aaron will be here with you if you need him." She told me, stepping away. Today my mother was wearing a black v-neck t-shirt and a pair of boot cut blue jeans with a pair of tennis shoes. Her face had been stripped clean of any make up. She looked flawless as usual.
"Okay mom, I won't be long. Just a quick shower and I'll be ready." I said sitting up. Then it hit me, I was still wearing the red dress from the evening before. I must have fallen asleep before I could get inside. Aaron brought me in but didn't bother changing me. I yawned, raising my hands over my head to stretch. It was finally here the day that we got to go back to the plantation and our quiet country lives. We had all had enough Memphis for the time being.
Mom had strolled out of the room unnoticed and Aaron had taken her place. Today, he had decided to be Elvis again. His dark hair was greased back neatly and he wore a red silk shirt and a pair of pin stripped bell bottoms with a large belt with gold chains hanging off it and a lion head belt buckle. On his feet were black dutch boots. He smiled at me when he saw I was awake.
"You are so beautiful." He breathed, hesitant to move toward me like he may break me if he was to get to close.
"I just woke up, Aaron." I spoke through a soft yawn.
"You're still very beautiful, my Linda." He smirked at the last part. "You know, last night when I was bringing you up stairs, I realized just how lucky I am to have a girl like you. You are everything I ever wanted."
"And you're my dream come true," I told him, nodding. "I love you Aaron."
"I love you, too." He promised, seating himself on the edge of the bed.
"Good, now I am going to take a shower." I told him, standing up and stretching my hands over my head once more.
"God," Aaron breathed, watching each move that I made. His golden eyes gleamed with a new form of curiosity. I ran my fingers through my curled hair and headed for the bathroom. Just like mom had promised, there was a small pile of clothing sitting on the counter top. The pile consisted of under garments, a red tank top and a red and black flannel top and a pair of black denim cut offs. Aaron had to of chosen this. I shook my head and pulled the clip that hung half out of my hair anyway. Peering out the window I watched as the street lights and neon's faded gaving way to daylight cars began to moveing up and down the roads. The calm of the city had passed and now it was time for it's awakening. I watched the intersections come to life and people passing as the shops began to open.
Tossing the gown to the floor, I stepped into the shower and adjusted the water to enjoy the warmth running down my body. It was a wake up call and had been just what I needed. I guess the reality was sitting in the back of my mind, but I didn't want to acknowledge it. I was just about to leave Memphis behind in the rear view mirror and head back to Texas. I had met a lot of wonderful people here and had about three reels of film to be developed but now, they were all just memories. I was on the fast track back to my life in Kileen with Aaron and my family on the farm.
Pressing my head against the wall, I closed my eyes. Oh, Aaron, I nad forgotten. He had to go home to say goodbye to his family. How was he feeling? Maybe he would change his mind and say goodbye to me. I squeezed my eyes shut, my blonde lashes brushed my pale skin. Tears mixing with the warm water that fell down my body.
