Jesse Klaver.
That name has fallen a few times already during the debate. It took Rob a minute to match it to the fitting figure.
Jesse Klaver.
A name he's heard and read quite often actually. There has been some controversy around it, if he remembers correctly. 'Too young to lead a party' the newspapers reported, 'No realistic policies- an idealist who only knows Disneylandpoltics', people had said. It's intriguing. None of the things he read match the reality that unfolds in front of him.
'So soft spoken'
They've said, but right now his words are so sharp they could cut anything.
'Doesn't like to argue'
But his eyes throw threatening bombs to whoever dares to cross them. He might not say much, but his body language and mimic is always on the defense.
'A peoples pleaser'
So why didn't he help Rob when his paper hit the ground? Why didn't he try to make a first good impression? What peoples pleaser suggests harsh environmental policies?
There's something so off about him, like he's hiding something behind those dark cold eyes. Rob can't help but watch him, his eyes fixed at this well built figure.
Jesse is shifting in his seat with a squeaky noise, only someone who really payed attention could hear. It catches Robs attention immediately, and once again his eyes fall on his neighbor to the left.
Why wouldn't he look back? At least acknowledge Robs presence? Somehow this rejection is nagging at him.
Jesse doesn't know Rob, Rob doesn't know Jesse. They have nothing they could discuss, and yet Rob wishes the stranger would at least grant him a bit of attention. Just one look, maybe even a smile. Just an acknowledgement in form of something, anything. He'd take anything.
But the only thing he got is his foot fixed on a piece of paper. In his mind Rob is still debating if he did that deliberately, if he just accidentally stepped on it, or did it with intention. It felt like such a calculated move, he must've done this on purpose. Or maybe Rob's just caught up in this fantasy again.
A flash on his phone brings him back to his own place. A message from Sjoerd.
"Everything okay? You didn't text"
It hurts to look at it. Again, he's this perfect boyfriend, always looking out for Rob, never missing one opportunity to be this sweet delightful human being. Again, a wave of guilt hits him. Ever since Sjoerd noticed something off, he's been trying so hard, fighting to reignite that spark. But that only pushes Rob further away. He needs space, from Sjoerd, from this whole boyfriend and boyfriend thing, from this unbearable sweetness.
His fingers hover over the keyboard, his mind at war with what to write. He smiles at the irony of all of it, smiling even harder when he realizes how dumb he must look. That's when he feels it.
A set of eyes, fixed on him. Just for a brief moment.
Just a second.
And still it leaves him breathless. Someone, somewhere, just granted him the most intense look he could have ever felt.
If felt so intimidate, and yet so distant. Just a few milliseconds of attention, directed at Robs shaken core. The moment the eyes met his frame, air left the lungs and didn't plan on flowing back. A moment of complete breathlessness. Who could possibly have that effect on him?
Rob erupts into a caughing fit, desperately trying to hold back, only worsening it. The more he tries to swallow the caugh, the more it irritates his itchy throat. By now everyone has stopped to watch him, what feels like hundreds set of eyes all fixed on him. There it is, the attention he craved.
