20- goodbye (?)

Outside, grey clouds have casted their way over the deserted city, making even the most vibrant of souls appear colorless.

"I think this is the part where I ask you to leave."

He has said, and so he listened.

Their goodbye felt warm, yet there was something missing. Maybe it was just the ill-fitting suit from the day before, or the way too short hug. Maybe it was just the way Jesses lips parted during the kiss, open enough to be inviting, but yet not inheriting the same warmth they did the night before. Not that anything would compare to what they shared that night.

Outside, the stone they walked on before has been soaked in the rain that was bound to come. Rob watches the raindrops race each other down the panorama window.

"Can I get you anything else?"

Her notebook appears huge in her tiny hands, her smile as fake as just any service workers smile would be. He nods her off, and so she leaves without protesting.

"Do you want to meet again?
-R"

He has sent the message the moment he sat in the taxi. He smiles at the absurdity of him copying Jesses gesture, adding the signature 'R' as if he wouldn't know who else that message came from. As if the app didn't show his name just above the message.

He enjoys it though, copying Jesse like someone he's looking up to. Maybe he even does.

He always thought Jesse was a selfish character, arrogant in a way. Not that he didn't like that, no, he admired that part. But being with him a bit more made him realize, Jesse always puts others first.

May it be in politics, or in bed. He's a peoples pleaser. Making others happy is his own way to gain pleasure. He's introverted, kind, and not afraid to let his emotional side show.

He loves books and cheesy gestures, though he would never admit it. He loves dancing in the rain and things people usually read in romance novels, though he would beg Rob to never tell a single soul.

He loves putting up a tough facade, when actually, he's as soft as it gets.

It has taken Rob a while to put the puzzle pieces together, but now that he completed the picture, he can't help but stare at it for the rest of his life.

The clock has turned sixty times since he's sat here, with nothing but a black coffee and way too sweet cake. People roamed in and out of the parliament café, some having the visitor-badge to them, some being coworkers he has no interest in getting to know. He watches them closely, imagining what their story might be.

The message sent hours ago hasn't been answered yet, and that causes him to ick. Sure, Jesse is a busy man, but if he had time to open it, he must have the time to answer it too, right?

The obsessive staring at the screen causes him to loose sight of what's around him, but when he catches a glimpse of what might be a red sole the screen lands long abandoned on the wanky table.

Their eyes meet as if caught in a crossfire.

"Jesse!"

Rob mouths, his facing burning up into a mess of teeth, wide grin and sparkling eyes. The distance between them is unbearable and cold, even Robs fire can't light the dissolving string in between.
