I shot awake with a start. Running a hand through my loose hair, my breathing began to calm to a slower pulse. Taking the back of my hand I swiped it across my forehead to find I had been sweating profusely from my nightmare.
"Gross" I sighed, wiping my hand off on my blanket before moving to get up. I swung my feet over the side of my mattress and stood up, making my way towards the bathroom to get cleaned up for the day.
"Thea?" Emily questioned, sitting up with a groan, eyes peaking open slightly. I just continued to the bathroom where I hung myself over the sink and washed by face with cold water to refresh myself. "Thea, are you alright?" I looked up to find a sleepy and concerned Emily leaning in the doorway, rubbing her eyes.
"Yeah I'm fine Em" I simply walked past her and back into our room after drying off my face and tying back my brown curls.
"Was it another nightmare?" She pushed the question, still following me.
"Emily, please just drop it" I begged, turning around to face her once more after pulling my jeans from the dresser.
"Alright, consider it dropped" she raised her hands in defence. I moved to change into my outfit, a pair of jeans and a grey SHIELD sweatshirt from the academy.
Emily and I had been best friends since I was brought to SHIELD. After all of the tests they had done on me I had met Emily Hunter-Morse. She was the daughter of SHIELD agents Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter who work with my adoptive parents Jemma Simmons and Leopoldo Fitz.
"Hello, I'm Emily" she stuck her hand out for me to shake.
"Go on" Jemma nudged me as I looked to her with concern. I gently took her hand and she swiftly pulled me in for a hug.
"You're going to be safe here" she reassured me as I felt more comfortable already.
My friend has been with me through everything. She was there when I was first brought in and adjusting to my new life at the SHIELD base. She was there when I returned from my last field mission.
"Thea! Where's Thea?" Emily stormed through the base once she received the news.
"She is getting some tests done and will be staying in quarantine for two weeks" agent May told her blankly as they both watched through the glass windows of the lab.
"Poor girl" Bobbi joined the pair as they all watched FitzSimmons run tests on me to find out what happened and why I wasn't effected.
"Hey Thea" Emily smiled as she joined me in the lab, both of us separated by the glass containment pod I was sat in. "I brought you something" she handed me a book that Fitz used to read us every night.
"Thanks Em" I looked to her with sadness in my eyes.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"I watched so much death" I began to cry. "I could have saved them but I was too late and now they are all dead because of me. I'm a monster!" I sobbed guiltily.
"No! It's not your fault. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time" she tried to comfort me. "And I'll be here whenever you need me" the blond promised.
She even stuck by my side at the academy when I was transferred.
"Day one, let's go!" Emily cheered, grabbing her bag as we moved towards the door.
"I can't do this" I paused in the doorway, causing her to look back with worry.
"Yes you can Thea,you are the strongest person I know" she held my hands in hers as a way to comfort me. "We will do this together, I'll be right here when you need me"
"Thanks Em" I hugged her tightly before we walked to our first day of classes.
~~~
"Here, eat up!" She tosses an apple my way after I finished getting dressed.
"Thanks" I caught it, pulling my jacket over my shoulders. I grabbed our bags and handed her, hers on our way out, making sure to lock the door behind us.
"Hey Flint!" Emily waved to our other friend.
"Hi Thea, Em!" He jogged to catch up with us as we walked across campus.
"What class do you have this morning?" I asked.
"In humans 101" he shrugged. "Oh shoot, I'm gonna be late! I'll see you girls later" he rushed off after checking his watch. We both laughed lightly in response before continuing to our class.
"Oh look here comes the cavalry and her emotional support!" A boy with black hair calls out as we continued down the halls.
"Keep walking" Emily warns me in a hushed tone as I tense up beside her.
"That's right keep running just like you ran from all your other mistakes!" I came to a halt at these words, making Emily groan, feeling that my presence is not beside her anymore.
"Here we go again" she sighs, turning around with her eyes squeezed shut, not wanting to deal with this on a Monday morning.
Question of the day: who is your favourite agents of SHIELD.I would also like to clarify that in this story May was the cavalry but the name was handed down to Thea later on. As always I would love if you would leave a comment or vote on each chapter by pressing the little star or comment button!
