Chapter 31

"Hey Zachary, what are you doing?" I questioned to the boy who had just entered my lab, eyes not leaving my work.

"I can't come visit my favourite scientist?" He joked back, leaning his back casually against the computer terminal where I had been typing away.

"Well keep it down, I'm trying to get some work done here" I moved back to the table behind me with the weapon I had been working on.

"What are you working on?" He leaned over my shoulder to watch me tinker with the device.

"It's a breathing filter to prevent us from any harm when we come into contact with midnight oil"

"But it doesn't effect you"

"No but it will effect my teammates"

"Aw you care about us" the boy from the future smirks teasingly.

"Yeah you guys are my family" I shrugged, turning back around.

"You care about all of us?" He says in the form of a question.

"Yeah wh—" I'm cut off by his hands on my waist. "What are you doing?" I turned around in his grasp and came face to face with him looking down at me. "Zach" I started in a warning tone.

"You've never called me Zach before" he notes proudly. "It's such a shame for what I'm about to do" he smirks down at me before he begins to tickle my sides.

"Zachary! Stop!" I tried to squirm out of his grasp but he simply held me to him closely. When I finally broke free I took a step back. "You are the absolute worst"

"Come on, you know you care about me"

"Zachary I swear, don't you start" I pointed at him with a warning glare while taking steps backwards until I bumped into the table again. He closed in on me and before I could process what was happening his lips were on mine, gently and softly as he kissed me and held me close. When we broke apart the two of us simply stared into each other's eyes until the speakers sounded out through the base.

"We got a location on Smith, take off in ten and debrief on the way" Charlie's voice sounded through the lighthouse base to warn us all of the upcoming mission.

"Looks like we have to go" I stepped out of his touch as he pouted. "You'll need this" I tossed him the new filter before getting the rest of my gear together and packing the masks for the others.

"Hey Thea?" He starts before moving to leave the lab. I turn around to see his worried filled eyes staring into mine. "Don't die out there" I nodded and returned what I though was a comforting smile.

Once he had left an odd feeling settled in my gut, but I shook it away and moved to change into my suit. The protective uniform that Emily and I wore was a grey full body suit with a utility belt. I pulled my blue bulletproof vest over my shoulders and zipped it up before setting my gun into the holster on my hip and grabbing my bag.

"Dr Smith was found in an old base that he once used. It is an underground bunker that has tunnels covering lots of land. We will be going in with partners, Me and Emily, Sage and Charlie and Thea with Zach" Flint announced the plan to us all as we took our spots in the command room on the bus, May flying us into the air. "Thea?" He presented me forward.

"These masks will protects you from the effects of midnight oil if you happen to run into it, but it will hit protect you from those who had already been exposed" I scratched my arm with nerves and fear, remembering what I had been through.

"Thank you, Thea" Emily took her own mask from me with a comforting look.

"Everyone know the plan?" Flint asked out once everyone had their own masks. We all nodded in understanding, a dark feeling falling over us all over the mission at hand.

"Looks like we will be alone together for a bit longer" Zachary smirked as he shuffled towards me.

"We have a mission to do" I gave him a stern look and reminded him of how important this was for me.

"Right"he actually agreed to my orders without hesitation.

"What happened earlier, that can't get in the way—"

"I know" the future boy cut me off before I could begin a long speech of protocol and rules.

"Good" I sat down in the lab.

"Everyone knows the plan? Go in search for Smith and if you find anything alert the rest of us. The orders are to kill on sight." May reminded the team after landing the plan near his secret base.

"Got it" I nodded to her with determination. The others started down the ramp but May grabbed my bicep, stopping me from moving away.

"I know that look Thea" she reminded sternly. "You find him, you kill him" my mentor repeated the orders to just me, knowing how important this was for me specifically. I marched down the ramp, pulling out and cocking my gun as I lead the others towards the base.

"We're in position" Emily reported back to me.

"We are too" Sage added.

"Good, let's go" I told them.

"Why did we get the door with ten insane lock?" Zachary complained, leaning casually against the wall while I worked on the electronic lock.

"Done" I stood back as the lock opened.

"What?"

"Come on" I urged him as I walked inside carefully, searching the halls and each room we passed. I paused before we turned down the next hallway. "Take the lead on this one" I told Zachary who looked at me in shock.

"But this is your mission, shouldn't you take the lead?"

"Trust me" I gave him a stern look which caused him to follow my orders and check the hallway before waving me out after him. Stepping out after him I felt a sudden presence behind me. Quickly coming to a halt I had turned around and aimed my gun at the man from my nightmares. Soon a dozen more men wearing masks came running out behind the Doctor. I holstered my gun and stared at the enemy before me, memories flooding back from my whole life, hitting me like a brick.
