Mackenzie's POV

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vampires. Vampires. Vampires. Vampires. The word bounces around inside my mind, causing my thoughts to become distorted, and everything starts happening in slow motion. But, if they were vampires, then wouldn't I be dead by now? 'Cause after all, everyone knows what vampires live off, right?
"Vampires" I repeat, time and time again under my breath. "Vampires, vampires, vampires"
I look out the window, into the deep forest, to find Leah, in her wolf form, looking up at me. Her teeth not bared, her posture not threatening; but cautious, and understanding to my situation.
"Then why haven't you killed me yet?" I ask, dumbfounded. I hear someone chuckle, breaking the stillness of the air that had overcome in the seconds of silence. Rosalie throws her arm back, hitting Emmett in the stomach with a loud 'Thump'. Yeash! That must've hurt to create a sound like that.
Esme sighs, and takes a step forwards to the sofa, only to cause me to shuffle backwards, hitting my head against a lamp shade in the progress. I turn around, and see a  large dent in the side; caused by my head.
"Sorry" I mumble, and pop the dent out again.
"That's ok" she says, not appearing to be angry with me at all. How could these people be vampires? They were so... Normal.
 "So, why haven't you killed me yet?" I repeat, only now noticing that most of the other Cullens had gone over to stand by the doors, blocking my only exits.
"Non of us wanted to be monsters, so instead of hunting humans.... we hunt animals" she explains. I keep my mouth shut, contemplating. So they weren't denying it, then? Therefore my theory was... right?
Scrap what I said earlier. If this was a practical joke, then this doesn't just take the biscuit; it takes the whole jar!
"Ok...." I say awkwardly, inhaling deeply. "So, if your all vampires, then why didn't the sunlight burn her?" I ask, pointing at Alice, who was blocking the exit closest to me. I hear another chuckle from behind me, before all of the others started to laugh.
"She's seen too many Dracula movies" Emmett says between laughs. I glare at him, before turning back to Esme.
"It's hard to explain, but we're not like the vampires you see on TV, we're more... civilised" she replies, shooting a look at Emmett, shutting him up.
"What did Edward mean when he said 'she's not human' ?" I question.
"Well..." Esme begins, and starts to explain their theories.
"A half vampire half human?" I snort.
"Told you she wouldn't believe us" someone says.
 "Emmett, this is serious" Rosalie says, her voice low.
"Yes" Esme says, ignoring my obvious disbelief and Emmett's outburst.
"But how? I never knew my dad" I say, managing to stop my laughter, and make my tone serious again.
"It is possible" she replies, "We met another hybrid who never knew his father, until a few years after his birth"
"But my mother and Harriett are human, I'm sure" I answer.
"Who's Harriett?" Alice asks, picking up on my mistake.
"Uh Oh" I say, and shut my mouth.
"Who's Harriett" she repeats, leaving the doorway and walking over to the couch. I shake my head from side to side; I'm not going to lead them to her.
Alice repeats the question over and over again, not taking no for an answer.
I sigh, defeated.
"Fine!" I say, "Harriett's my sister, she's been looking after me since I was born. Every few days, she'd leave at sunrise, and come back later on in the day with food and clothes. Now, because of those stupid mutts chasing me away, she could be anywhere now. Now, I might never find her, and it's all because of those dogs
Silence overcomes the room, no one apart from me was breathing, only one heartbeat in the room.
Suddenly, a pair of quick footsteps come up the stairs, and Jasper walks in.
"Mackenzie, what does your sister look like?" he asks, causing every head in the room to turn to him.
"She's short, green eyes and has long, light brown hair" I reply, "Why, is she there? Did she come for me?"
"How old is she?" he says, ignoring my other two questions.
"About 15" I answer, "Why?"
"Um, Carlisle, Esme, could I speak with you outside for a moment please?"
Carlisle and Esme follow him outside, swapping a confused look with eachother.
"What's happened? Is Harriett alright?" I ask. No one answered.
"Is she alright?!" I shout, trying to get some kind of answer from someone, anyone.
"Mackenzie, maybe you should wait until--" Alice begins, getting cut off by a gasp from downstairs.
"--she's dead?" someone downstairs asks, their voice low.
And that's all the conformation I needed.
I sprint to the doorway, dodging the Alice and Edward as they try to stop me, before running full pelt down the stairs. Esme, Jasper and Carlisle look up at me, sadness in their eyes. I notice that Jasper was holding a newspaper. I freeze, before hearing multiple footsteps descending the stairs.
"Oh, shove it" I mutter, before jumping over the banister, and landing on the floor with a loud 'thump'. It was only an eleven or twelve foot distance between the banister and the floor, but, even still, some of the Cullens looked shocked.
I snatch the newspaper from Jasper's hands, and run over to the sofa. I look at the front page, the headline read 'Young girl killed in traffic accident'. There was a picture of a blue Renault Megane, with a large dent in the front. 'Read more on page 6' it says, in small print underneath the picture. I flick past the ads in the first few pages, before getting to page six.
'Young girl, aged 14 - 15 knocked down by car in La Push. The girl is said to be about 5 foot, light brown hair, green eyes. The police found no identification on her, and are now looking for family members to come forward'
I gasp, shocked. The description was so alike Harriett, I couldn't believe it.
But it can't be Harriett, it just can't. She can't be dead, my sister cannot be dead.
