Chapter 8

Mackenzie's POV

"A mirror?" Edward asks, still unsure.

"I think, but I can't tell. It seems she can block my power, too" Eleazar replies, looking at me.

"How is that possible?"

"I don't know. All I've heard is that it is an extremely strong defencive power. Especially if it can block pathiokinesis and ability detection"

"Is it similar to Bella's shield?" Edward asks, glancing over at Bella.

"Similar, yes. But I could still detect Bella's power. With Mackenzie, it's like I've hit a brick wall" Eleazar answers.

"Is there anyway we could test it?" Edward questions, looking around the room.

"Kate?" Tanya asks, turning around to face the other blond woman.

"Sure. Only if it's ok with Mackenzie" Kate replies, looking at me.

"What?" I ask, glancing to my left, right and behind me. What does she mean? 'Test' my power?

"Don't worry, it won't hurt. Too much" at the end of her sentence, her voice drops to a whisper. I begin to back away; so far that I hit my head on the window wall.

"Kate, maybe this isn't that much of a good idea" Esme says,looking worried. "What if she isn't a mirror?"

"It's the only way to test" Kate replies, "Mackenzie, we need to test your power"

"How?" I ask suspiciously, "Because I'm not being a guinea pig"

"Fine. Who'd like to volunteer?"

When nobody answers, Kate begins to get impatient.

"Oh, come on! She's just a child, and your the ones who're too scared" she whines.

"I vote Edward" Rosalie says, earning a disapproving glare from both Bella and Edward.

"It was his turn during my shield training, why doesn't Emmett give it a go?" Bella asks, looking over to Emmett.

"Come on" Kate says, signaling for him to step forward. Emmett reluctantly gets up, and slowly walks over to Kate. Everyone in the room is silent; including the mutts and Renesmee, who were now looking scared. Kate puts her hand on Emmett's arm, and begins to count down.

"Five, four, three, two, one", on the one, there was a buzzing sound, and Emmett falls to the ground with a thump. He curses under his breath a few times, though nobody corrects him.

"Chicken" Kate taunts, turning her attention back to me. No way is she doing that to me. If it hurt Emmett, a full vampire, then how much can it hurt me? Before I could react, Kate grabs my arm. I hear the familiar buzzing sound, and see the slight electrical current, seconds before she falls to the ground.

"Kate? What's the matter?" Garrett asks, helping her up.

"I tried to shock her, but ended up shocking myself. Hurt like anything" she replies, glaring at me.

"Guess you got a taste of your own medicine" Emmett laughs, seconds before Rosalie hits him on the back of the head. "What was that for?"

"For being an idiot" she replies, "Anyway, Eleazar, how is that possible?"

"As I said: the mirror effect."

"Interesting" Edward muses, "So if Jane used her power on her-"

"-she'd be on the receiving end" Eleazar finishes Edwards sentence.

"Who's Jane?" I ask, interrupting the conversation. A long silence makes me regret my question.
