We silently agreed to go back to Huck's. We had had our fun at the party, but something had shifted between us. There was still the smiles, the touches, the laughs, but it was slightly more serious knowing we were actually going to talk when we got back.
Flynn found a tent and a bag of supplies from Huck waiting on the front porch so he grabbed that and we started hiking back towards the creek. It was getting darker so Flynn passed me a flashlight and placed a hand on my back to steady me. The fact that my shirt didn't have a back and the skin to skin contact was driving me a little insane, I'm not gonna lie, but we managed to cross the creek and make it to the creek without any trouble.
I was on supplies duty so I gathered some small pieces of wood to start a fire. I picked some rocks out of the creek to make a ring around the fire as well and Flynn said I was the best fire maker her knew.
Once he set the tent up and threw the bags inside he joined me beside the small flame. It was just enough to see each other's faces with the help of the moonlight. He spread a blanket out to sit on and we made ourselves comfortable without saying a word to each other.
There was a large rock so lean against next to the fire so we did that, our legs brushing up against each other and our hips resting comfortably side by side.
"I guess you're waiting for me to spill my guts to you, huh?" Flynn asked me as I turned to face him instead of the fire.
"Not all of your guts. I would like you to still be alive," I joked, placing a hand over his gut to prove my point.
He laughed and my hand moved up and down slightly as his stomach did the same. "But you're probably curious right?" he asked again.
"Yeah...but we all have secrets," I told him.
He nodded his head in agreement and for the first time since I met him he actually looked nervous. He had always been so quick witted and cocky almost that now he seemed lost and out of his element.
I reached over and took his hand in the silence. He lightly squeezed my fingers as a thank you and took a deep breath.
"I've wanted to kiss you since I saw you leaning over your car engine," Flynn admitted all in one breath. It wasn't exactly what I thought he was going to start with, but hey, I wasn't complaining.
I felt my cheeks stretch from the smile that came automatically at his words and I could feel his eyes on mine even though I was still looking down at our intertwined hands.
"I feel this thing between us and it reminds me of my pa-," Flynn began but he cut himself off awkwardly. I looked up to see him gazing up at the stars. "It reminds me of my past. This girl. I was in love with this girl."
The words hung with the smoke in the air and I was afraid to say anything. I didn't want to stop him in case he was going to share more, so I waited patiently, stroking his thumb gently with my own.
"Her name was Rachelle. I wasn't supposed to see her. Her parents were filthy rich. They watched over her like she was their prized possession. I was some lowly guy who rode a motorcycle and didn't have correct manners at the dinner table," Flynn reminisced and the way he talked about it made it sound like it was years ago. Who knows, it could have been.
"She and I...we had something good. It was a secret. It was dangerous. It was love," Flynn stated and I had no doubt in my mind that he had loved this girl. Anyone with ears could hear the emotion in his voice.
"I got caught sneaking out of her house one night. I was nearly thrown in jail for trespassing. Rachelle's parents moved her to a different town and no matter who I asked nobody would tell me. I couldn't reach her. I tried everything. She was just gone," Flynn's voice had grown softer and raspier. I didn't know what to say.
All of this information was pouring out of him and I couldn't figure out why he was telling me this. Why did he want me to know about Rachelle?
"When I saw you for a moment I thought it was her," Flynn confessed. He turned to face me for the first time and his eyes were open and honest. "She had the same build, the same look. But it was you, and yet I couldn't walk away."
"Flynn..." I said his name for the third time that night without following it up with anything.
"When I looked at you I thought of her and that's why I offered to drive you. I thought I could feel like I was with her again, but then I realized you were your own person and you had your own quirks and slowly I have begun to look at you and think of you and not her," Flynn confessed. His free hand reached over to cup my face. My eyes were brimming with unshed tears for him. I felt so bad because there wasn't anything I could do.
"Faith I know we just me and I know everything I just told you may sound fake and made up but I promise you it's the wholehearted truth," Flynn promised me, his head dipping down to be level with mine.
"I believe you," I whispered, not being able to voice anything louder. My throat was tight with emotion and it wasn't even my story to tell. I felt like it was partially my fault for looking like his lost love, but I knew I couldn't control that.
"You do?" he marveled, his eyes searching mine.
"Of course," I told him, reaching up to mimic his hand on my cheek by placing my hand on his.
He smiled gratefully and leaned closer, bringing us back to the position with our foreheads gently touching and our noses brushing slightly.
"I don't want this to be weird...you make me feel so many things and-"
"Shh...," I cut him off, "shut up and kiss me," I whispered thinking back to the first song we danced to. His eyes met mine instantly. The look we shared could only be described as lust before our eyelids fluttered shut and our lips met for the first time.
His lips moved slowly at first as he savored the first moment, but they quickened as the kiss continued. I let go of his hand and tangled my fingers in his hair as I felt some of it fall forward and brush my face. His hands cupped my face and traveled down my back leaving tingles where his warm hands touched my cool skin.
This was what it felt like to be kissed.
I gasped for breath and when Flynn leaned back ever so slightly I seized the moment to leave little pecks long his jaw. He leaned me back and laid me down with my back on the blanket and the fire to my left and rock to my right. I pulled on his t-shirt as he kissed me again.
His lips were so sweet and warm and his hands kept distracting me from what his lips were doing. I never wanted this to stop, and Flynn was thinking the same thing.
We went on like that, full on making out in the woods before we were both sufficiently out of breath and in need of a break. Flynn pulled me close and lifted me up bridal style. I squealed in fright at first but found his neck to hold on to.
"I'm afraid there was only one sleeping bag in the pack..." Flynn trailed off, but I knew he knew I didn't mind.
"Guess we will have to share," I suggested with a shrug. He grinned and pecked my cheek before setting me down to get through the door. We cuddled up in each other's arms and I didn't want to go to sleep because that moment was all I could ever ask for.
I felt wanted and needed. I felt appreciated.
"Goodnight, Faith," Flynn whispered, just like the previous night.
"Goodnight, Flynn," I whispered back and we drifted off to sleep.
