Over the next few days, nothing drastic had changed between your relations with Hitoshi. He seemed to know you both wanted to take things slower, since this was both yours first relationship. You both had already been so close before, that only outwardly affection changed slightly.
Holding each other's hand became more common, sleeping in each other's arms continued too. But instead of just subconsciously cuddling in the night, you fell asleep that way instead.
Through these small little intricacies of your relationship, Hitoshis parents seemed to take notice. The day before New Year's Eve they asked you both if there was something going on between you. Hitoshi's response was golden.
"We like each other, what did you expect to happen?"
It got a small chuckle from Hatori and Mayuko before they congratulated you both for figuring your feelings out. Apparently they both saw it coming before you two ever decided to make a move. Mother's intuition or something of the sort was Mayukos explanation.
It was New Years Eve now, and you were sitting on Hitoshi's bed as he was taking a shower in the bathroom. It was only around eight and you were scrolling through your phone waiting for your partner to finish getting ready. You and him had planned to stay home and spend time inside. Taking a rest from all the outings you had been taking since you arrived.
His parents had gone to a gathering with some other doctors from the hospital his dad worked for and weren't going to be home until late tomorrow. They had wanted to all go to the temple together but this was more important to his career.
Which left the two of you alone for at least the next sixteen hours.
He came out of the bathroom and made his way over to you, comfortable in his pajamas just as you had been. He sat beside you and wrapped his arm around your shoulders.
"Ready to put on a movie and bake some cookies?" You asked as you faced him with a smile on your face.
"Yes, I'm craving a chocolate chip cookie right about now." He said while standing up, completely serious but still enthusiastic.
"You know, it's cute that you are so monotone towards the public and then exclaim your love for sweets while we are alone. I like being one of the only ones to see you like this." You were in the kitchen when he turned back towards you after you finished talking.
"That's because you're not judgmental, and if you were to ever tell anyone about it, they would never believe you." He joked as he lightly gripped your head and laid a peck on your forehead.
That's another thing that had increased, forehead and cheek kisses. You hadn't legitimately kissed him yet, but that would change soon enough. At least you'd hoped so.
For the next two-ish hours, you two tried figuring out how to make homemade chocolate chip cookies while Pirates of the Caribbean played in the living room. Sitting down on the small loveseat in front of the TV after the baking was done. The credits rolled, so you turned on the sound of music, per your request.
Hitoshi agreed to sit through it with you. He always said that musicals weren't his favorite, but there he was, knowing many of the lyrics to the opening number. It was funny to you, how soft he actually was compared to how he looked.
Around the dinner and dance scene you checked your phone for the first time since the movie started, and realized there were only about five minutes until the new year.
"Oh shit. Look." You showed him the time on your phone, sitting up from resting your head on his chest. "Will you do something for me to go into the new year? Before we miss it."
"What do you want me to do, get you more cookies? Because there are a lot of extras." He actually looked earnest about you finishing all of the cookies tonight, which was ridiculous. Why did he want that? Who knew for sure, if you had to guess it was probably because he didn't want to eat all of them himself.
"No, it has nothing to do with the cookies. I want to dance with you."
"You want to dance with me? Why?" He acted like you just asked him to set fire to his house.
"Because you're my boyfriend, and I want to dance into the new year with you." He still looked confused, but then something hit him.
"You haven't said that before. You hadn't called me your boyfriend before, is what I meant, I guess that makes it official." A smile dressed his face as he stood up with a dramatic hand out towards you. "Well come on, we only have like 3 minutes until the new year."
"Pick a song."
"No, I want you to pick."
You started playing Paul Anka's, Put Your Head On My Shoulder, through your phone. Then you slid it into your pocket and grabbed his hand. Starting off with some playful swaying, that slowly turned into some spins and then a hug. The alarm on your phone you had set earlier for 12 a.m. went off right as the song was coming to an end, with a soft shake in your pocket.
You took your head off of his chest from your previous swaying hug, and looked him straight in his eyes as your faces were stayed only a few inches away from each other.
"Happy New Year Hitoshi." You smiled up at him, arms loosely holding onto his sides. He stared at you, pupils dilating as he focused.
"Can I kiss you?" Four words, four very simple words in the scheme of things, left his mouth. Yet somehow, they felt so complicated that you couldn't spout any words after he asked you his question.
Instead you moved your body closer, bringing one of your hands up to his jaw. Smiling like an idiot while inching closer. You stopped right before you met his face, noses brushing against each other until he made the final move.
Your lips met, and though your eyes were closed it felt as if you could see everything. He looked beautiful, felt beautiful, everything was mundanely beautiful. You didn't know how else to describe it, it wasn't like any other kiss you had experienced. Even if that list was very small, you knew this was completely different.
His lips were slightly chapped, but that feeling slowly went away as it deepened. It didn't last very long, and though it was new, it was so natural;
Perfect, if anything could be perfect, this would be its definition.
As you separated a few seconds later, both of your eyes finally opened. Yours a bit blurry at first, but then they focused on the handsome man in front of you. You could kiss him forever if you had the chance.
"Now I can wish you a Happy New Year." His voice was deeper than usual and slightly scratchy, almost like how he sounds in the morning.
"You know I was hoping that would happen tonight, but I didn't know if you would have the balls to do it. I'm proud of you." He could tell you were joking, but still scoffed at your remark.
You laughed under your breath at his reaction. Bringing him into a small hug until you loudly exclaimed you were tired. You decided to finish the movie first though, getting comfortable back on the couch. Right after it finally finished, you and him made your way to the bathroom. Brushing your teeth quickly, you found each other falling asleep in each other's arms once more.
This time slightly different as you gave a goodnight kiss to him before falling into your dreamy slumber.
