Ashamed

When I got home, I locked the door behind me immediately. I was completely out of breathe. Who the fuck was following me? Why? I didn't have the time to turn around and see. My flight or fight had just kind of kicked in and of course, like a normal person, I chose flight.

My mom heard the door slam and rushed to the door from the kitchen.
"Why are you so out of breathe? What happened?" She instantly became concerned.
"Someone was.." I was still trying to catch my breathe, "someone was following me."

"Well did you see who?" My mom was almost instantly panicking.
"No I just started running." I leaned over, holding my knees. I'd ran like a whole two blocks as fast as I could.
"I think I'm just gonna go to my room now." I pointed upstairs and stood up properly.

"Okay, yeah. I'm going to secure all of the windows. But can you wait for a second? I want to talk to you after I do so." My mom had a hand on her hip. She was still concerned, I could just tell. It was a mom thing. I nodded and she started attending to the windows as I stood by the steps.

She finally approached me.
"Okay, so, there's this family thing we do every summer. It's basically a reunion. I was wondering if you'd want to bring Leo with. But if you do, we don't mention the drugs and nonsense, okay? I've already talked to Alyse and Krys and they know not to bring it up." She was definitely ashamed that my boyfriend was a former drug addict.

But he'd definitely changed. And I'm glad she seemed to see that. I mean leave it up to me to fall in love with someone with substance abuse. To be fair though, I didn't know that when I met him or even until after I started dating him.

"Of course. I don't think Leo would be comfortable with talking about his past either."
Mom and I said our good nights and I went upstairs. I busted into Alyse's room to scare her and Krys but I was entirely shocked and honestly sort of grossed out by what I'd seen.
