(TWO MONTHS LATER)
"Happy birthday Ren!" Steve exclaimed over the phone. I pulled it away from my ear and winced at his loud voice.
"Thanks Steve," I laughed.
"I'll be over for dinner later today. How's your day been so far?"
"Good," I smiled, happy to realize that I have finally escaped that wretched curse of horrible birthdays brought on by the Smiths. I rarely thought about them anymore. Today seems like a final goodbye from their cruel tricks and bad parenting.
"Did Harry come by and make your birthday a little extra special this year?"
"Steve!" I blushed at his insinuation.
"Was it good?"
"Oh my gosh! Stop! I haven't seen Harry yet today," I could feel my face getting hotter as Steve laughed on the other end of the phone.
"What a shame. Well, you've still got the rest of the day to get some alone time with him."
"You're so annoying," I rolled my eyes, even though he couldn't see.
"You--" the doorbell rang as soon as Steve started talking and I interrupted him.
"Hold on, the door just rang. I'll call you back later."
"Okay, I'll see you later, doll!"
"Bye."
I opened the door to find Harry there, smiling at me.
"Hi," I smiled at him.
"Happy birthday love!"
"Thank you," I leaned in to kiss him when he brought his hands out from behind his back and held something between us.
"Ahh! What is that?!" I looked down at the animal clucking in Harry's hands.
"It's a hen!" Harry's smile grew and I stared at him with wide eyes.
"Why did you get me a hen for my birthday?!"
"Don't you get the joke? Come on, love, think about our ship name!"
"Ship name?"
"Harry plus Ren equals Hen! It only makes sense to get you one for your birthday," Harry scoffed.
"Oh yeah, that makes total sense," I furrowed my eyebrows at him, confused that he thought this would be a perfect birthday present.
"Doesn't it?"
"Yeah, sure."
"April Fool's! Haha! I really got you with that one!"
"You suck," I tried to hold back a smile.
"Um, so do you want it?" Harry asked and nudged it towards me, reminding me of its presence.
"As thoughtful of a gift that was, no thanks," I laughed. Harry laughed as well, and put the chicken down in a cage beside him on the floor.
"I got you a better present than that, actually," he said, walking inside, taking the animal inside with him so no one else in the building could notice it.
"What is it?" I asked eagerly. I never got a real birthday present before.
"Where's your phone?" Harry asked, changing the subject. Huh.
"Over there," I pointed to the couch.
Harry walked over and grabbed my phone, walking towards the window.
