NEFERTARI REFUSED TO BE A MARTYR. SHE WOULD NOT DIE IN SPITE OF THE SAINTS.
Because Nefertari remembered the way her families bodies looked strewn carelessly, tossed away like used dolls, eyes glassy, necks bent at awkward angles, arms reaching out.
Maybe, the saints hadn't cared about the little eight year old they left behind, whose hopeless prayers were left unanswered.
So she would not die for them, little eight year old Nefertari decided as the ship had rocked and the skies had screamed, she hadn't known where they were taking her, but she remembered thinking that she would not die on this path that the saints had put her on.
When she arrived in Kerch, the hub of all international trade, after a fortnight on a slaver ship, she hadn't spoken a word of the Kerch language and was taken to woman named Tante Heleen, to work in a place called the Menagerie.
The other girls wouldn't talk to her, or even look at her, and she hadn't realised why until she was a little bit older and younger girls arrived that didn't know what they had been pushed into.
When Kaz Brekker, Bastard of the Barrel, comes to her with an offer to break into the most protected building in Fjerda, to break out an old man and his little chemistry set all for 4 million kruge, shesimply can't refuse - I mean she can, but 4 million kruge? Even she can't resist that much.
So she joins his raggedy group of criminals to attempt what everyone believes to be impossible. To prove everyone wrong.
