You didn't lift your head when you heard the front door opening. You continued to stare down at your lap, pretending to be sad as you tell yourself there's no going back now.
"Hey, baby."
You heard Selena say, followed by the sound of her taking off her shoes and putting them down by the door.
"I was hoping you'd be here when I got home. It was a busy day in the studio. I need some quality time with my girl this evening."
Normally you'd be looking at her with big bright eyes by now. Just the idea of spending time with her usually brings you inexpressible happiness. So when you didn't look at her, she had a feeling that something wasn't quite right.
"Hey," she whispered softly as she sat down.
You didn't have to turn your head to know she was staring at you with those worried eyes. You could feel them resting on you as she reached for your hand and intertwined her fingers with yours.
"What's going on? You're quiet."
You let out a shaky breath before looking at her for the first time since she walked through the door. She was frowning as soon as she noticed the same look on your face. You looked unhappy. Your usually sparkling eyes were dull, your cute smile not even close to showing.
"There's something I need to talk to you about."
"Well, that doesn't sound very good." She said, chuckling nervously, to which you nodded slowly, causing her heart to drop. "What is it, y/n? You're scaring me now."
"Selena," you paused and took a shaky breath once more before you spoke the words that made her feel as if the world stopped spinning. "I think we should break up."
"W-What?" She asked in disbelief, scoffing as she pulled her hand away from yours. "Why? I thought everything was fine. Things haven't ever been better between us."
"I know."
"So what's the problem?"
"I don't know, Selena! I just need some space."
"From me?" She whispered with tears in her eyes, completely devastated.
You just sighed and hung your head.
"I don't understand. I don't know what I did wrong." She sniffled. "What'd I do?"
That question absolutely broke your heart. You quickly looked back at her, the sight of her lip trembling and her hands shaking as she tried her very hardest to keep herself together, despite knowing she was breaking down, was too much to bear.
"Baby,"
"No, don't." She mumbled as you tried to take her hand. "I can't let you hold it. Don't hold me. It's only going to hurt more." She sniffled and lowered her head, swallowing the lump in her throat. "I don't know what to do without you. You're not just my girlfriend, you're my best friend. You're my everything. What am I supposed to do without you?"
"Oh, babe," you whispered softly, clicking your tongue as you brought her into your arms.
You knew you broke, despite the fact that the prank wasn't supposed to end this soon. But how are you supposed to go on with knowing how much you're breaking your girlfriend's heart? You couldn't do it. You couldn't care less about the prank. You only care about your girl.
You didn't say anything for a moment. Because despite how much she didn't want you to hold her, knowing it was only going to hurt more in the end, she couldn't help but cling to you. She didn't want to pull away. You're all she has. She needs you to comfort her, to never let go.
"I love you."
"I love you more." She sniffled against your neck. "Please don't let go. I promise I'll do whatever it takes. I just can't lose you, I can't."
"I'm not going anywhere, Selena. I won't, I never would."
She sniffled, slowly looking up at you. She was confused because you just told her minutes ago you were breaking up.
"Selena," you sighed and stared at her guiltily. "I wasn't ever going to break up with you. It was just a prank."
She was in disbelief.
"What? Why would you do that to me?"
"I don't know. It was stupid."
"Yeah, it was." She agreed, her tone harsh.
You didn't do anything but nod, completely understanding why she was so upset.
"I really am sorry. I don't know why I thought it was a good idea to pull it on you. Please believe me when I tell you I truly am so sorry."
She sighed but nodded her head.
"I believe you. I forgive you. Just don't do that again. Please? Promise me."
"I promise you." You agreed before she pulled you into her arms. "I love you lots. I hope you know I'm never leaving you."
"I know." She smiled a little and kissed your head. "I love you too, y/n."
