"Stay back!" Link tried to yell to the crowd over their continuous questions and clicking of cameras.
"Just a few minutes!", "Any comment, Madam President?", "What do you have to say about this?", "Madam President, a moment of your time please!", "Hyrule Times, anything to say on the recent incident?"
All the reporters continued to shout and demand from the woman who was surrounded by security as she tried her best to cut through the crowd towards the car that was waiting for her. Zelda had always been such a confident person so she held her head up high and put on a brave face for the cameras which were constantly being shoved in her face. After so many years of having her face in the limelight, she had learnt how to smile convincingly even when she was completely beat down.
"Move away," Link yelled again, "Let the President through! A statement will be issued in due course once President Zelda has been transported back to the Palace!"
Finally making it to the limo, Link opened the door for her, making sure no reported decided to go rouge and try to follow her, before Link got in as well. He sat himself opposite her as he always did in order to keep an eye on her for the journey. He knew she hated that he was constantly following her but it was his job to keep her safe at all times.
The rest of the security guards that had accompanied them on their walk to the car stood guard outside the door to stop the reporters advancing. With the final checks done, Link told the driver to go and also used his radio to signal the two cars behind them to follow, both of which contained additional security just in case.
As the sounds of the journalists and their flashing cameras died down, the two were thrown into silence with only the sounds of passing cars to fill it.
Zelda's fake smile dropped the second she was out of camera shot. A deep sigh escaped her lips as she slumped down in her seat, all but abandoning her presidential stance. It was clear she had a headache because she had raised her hand to her head and was slowly massaging over her temple irritably.
"Long day, Madam President?" Link offered her a sympathetic but weak smile which could barely be seen in the minimal light which seeped in through the windows from the street lamps on the night road.
"You have no idea," she chuckled flatly, "But then again, no one said running a country would be easy."
"To be fair, these are unprecedented times. No one can predict Ganon's moves, he's nothing more than a hit and run terrorist with a gang of radicals at his side which the press exaggerate to be an army. His idea of opposition to you is just to stir up trouble and hope for the best." Link tried to sound reassuring but instead it just sounded as though he was trying to convince himself.
"Thanks for trying, Link, but I don't think this problem is going to go away simply by ignoring it. That's the second time this month Ganon has targeted armoured trucks from banks. Now not only do I have to worry about people's rightful pay being interrupted, I have to worry about whatever Ganon is buying with the money he's looted."
With that ominous prospect now thrown into the cards, the two were sprung back into relative silence.
Zelda was worried sick about the future of Hyrule. She had been in charge for so long, she knew no other life than when she was protecting Hyrule. Ever since she was little, she always wanted to protect who she could, she was thoughtful like that. And since her parents had been rich, Zelda had made it her vow to use her fortune for good, giving to the needy where she could.
That benevolence extended into her Presidency. She was quite young when she was elected and many were skeptical but as time went on, they came to realise that she was now leading a Golden Age of Hyrule and so she had the trust of the people and everyone was at peace.
That was, until Ganon came along and disturbed the peace with fear mongering and trying to turn people against her with lies. So far, it was just a small group which were no immediate threat but in the past few months, they had become bolder and more confident to the point they were begining to attack places and people.
Though Zelda insisted not to, Link increased the security around Zelda's Palace and her personal guard. Link had been a part of her security since her first day in office and like her, he was relatively young at the time. After all these years, it was safe to say they had a mutual respect for each other even if they had clashing ideals at times. Zelda detested violence especially gun crime, but as her Head of Security, Link always had a gun belted to his hip and was in control of what was essentially her own private army.
"I suspect the press will already be waiting for me outside the Palace," Zelda sighed after a while of silence, "I'll issue a quick statement on the recent attack of the bank truck, but after that, I am done with work for the day. As selfish as it may be, all I want to do this evening is have a relaxing bath, read my book and have a decent night's sleep for once."
"It's not selfish," Link mused, "You haven't had a day off to yourself for so long, I think you deserve this one evening at least."
With that, the limo rounded the corner and came up to the driveway outside the gates of the Palace. As she predicted, there were already a load of journalists waiting for her outside the gates. The cars drove up towards the entry steps and as Zelda stepped out, she put on her fake smile again as Link joined her.
A podium had already been set up with microphones sticking out in all directions. Holding her head high, she approached it calmly and waited for the reporters to quiet down a bit.
"Good evening," she started easily looking in turn at every camera, "The recent attack on the bank bus earlier this day has indeed been brought to my attention. In fact, I have just come from a meeting with my ministers where we discussed the matter. This attack, carried out by the man named Ganon is one of many brutal and needless violent acts against Hyrule. These criminals that follow him want us to crumble, to see peace turn to anarchy. I ask you now, not to panic."
With that, despite the flood of questions directed her way, she turned on her heel with grace and started towards the front doors of the Palace with Link and her security guards in tow.
The second the doors closed and she was standing in the white and gold entrance hall, Zelda let another exasperated sigh escaped her as the questions from the reporters were cut off.
