Josh POV
"Shit." I drop my books on the floor and hear Leo and his buddies snickering as they walk past me. "Oh man...I'm gonna be late." I think as I quickly pick up my books off the floor. Someone kneels down and gives me some papers from my folder scattered on the floor. "What happened here?" The person asks me. "Nothing..." I sigh a hearty sigh and jam the books in my backpack while thanking the person. "It's nothing really." They reply. "Thank you for your help, miss."
The person winced at me. "What is it?" I ask genuinely concerned. "I'm not-Well-I just-I'm not a girl. My pro-prono-nouns are they/them." They stutter. "Oh shit, I am so sorry. Thanks for telling me." I somehow manage to get out without making even more of a fool of myself.
"It's fine. Thanks for listening." The person shoots a look at the clock and looks back at me. "Got to go. I'm going to be super late for fourth period. I'm Emery." "Josh. Josh Brewer and so am I. What period do you have lunch?" "Uhhh let me see...sixth." The person replies. "Cool. Me too." I say, as looking at them. We both eventually scurry off into classes and meet back up at sixth period.
Emery POV
"That boy was strange, but kind. He accepted my pronouns as well. Maybe I can say I have a friend now." I thought as I marched off into the lunch room. It was loud and kids were yelling. Not my ideal place to eat but, whatever. "And that boy was kinda cute too-No he wasn't! Stop it Em!" My mind kept trying to tell me he was cute but I kept dissing it.
I look around and run over to where Josh is sitting alone, reading a chemistry textbook. Weird. "Hey. Josh, right? Not good with names." The boy looks up at me and yelps. Maybe he didn't see me...? "Y-yeah it's Josh!" He replies. I sit down across from him and take out my food. An apple, a salad with Italian Dressing and, a peanut butter sandwich and jam. Jelly is too hard to spread. I start eating and the silence between us is awesome. I hate being pressured to speak, especially when it's about me and I could tell maybe he felt like that too. The boy looked up at me, then looked back into his book. "Oh yeah! I almost forgot...here." I gave him a tall cup of coffee.
"Oh thanks! You don't know how much I needed this!"
"No big deal."He looks back up at me again and sighs. "Uhh Emery? I have kind of a...confession."
"Well? What's up? You can tell me." I say with my most caring voice I can muster."Yeah...I'm...gay." He says to me looking nervous. "Cool." I say.
"HA! Take that head! He isn't cute and we have no chance because he's gay!"Josh POV
Oh shit. Holy shit. I can't believe this is happening. They accept me? This is crazy!
"Thanks. I really needed to hear that."
Before I could say anything else the bell rang loudly and we both ran off to seventh period.
