"So I've been in a coma for a week? And you still don't know why?" I repeated, my voice cracking with disbelief. Confusion weighed on me like a fog I couldn't shake.

I was still in the hospital—IVs in both arms, a plastic wristband snug on my skin. I wore a hospital nightgown with a gaping back, paired with light blue pants that barely reached my ankles. Everything about the room felt sterile and surreal.

"No," Dr. Roderick replied, his tone clinical but honest. "Which is... highly unusual. Typically, comas are caused by something identifiable—a brain injury, like a tumor or concussion, or intoxication from drugs or alcohol."

I frowned, shaking my head. "But I've never touched drugs or alcohol. And I'm sure I don't have any brain conditions."

Dr. Roderick nodded, making a note on his clipboard. "Exactly. Which is what makes your case so perplexing. This is a first for me—there are no known incidents of someone going into a coma with zero underlying factors."

He paused, then looked at me closely. "Ms. (Surname), do you remember anything—anything at all—from just before it happened?"

I closed my eyes and searched my memory. Nothing came but a blinding wall of white. My hand flew to my temple as a sharp pain sliced through my head.

"No," I said, wincing. "Nothing."

"That's normal," he said gently, scribbling again. "Memory loss can accompany coma recovery. Don't worry, it might come back."

It helped—a little. The tension eased from my shoulders, and I let my hand drop from my head as the pain dulled.

"Now," Dr. Roderick said, standing up, "Allison here will escort you around for a few routine checks. Nothing serious—we just want to see how you're doing physically."

The nurse, Allison, stepped forward with a warm smile. "If everything looks good, you might be going home today," the doctor added, grinning.

"Alright, honey," Allison said as she gently disconnected my IVs. "The room we're heading to isn't far. Just let me know if you need a wheelchair."

She placed a steadying hand on my bicep while I swung my legs over the edge of the bed. My feet touched the cold floor. I pushed myself up.

I wobbled. Just a little. But I didn't fall.

"You're doing amazing," Allison praised. "Most patients need help walking at first. You're ahead of the curve."

We exited the room together, her hand still lightly on my arm.

"Let's check in with the doctor again. If all goes well, you'll be discharged later today," she said. I gave her a nervous smile and nodded.

I collapsed onto the bed with a dramatic sigh, flopping backward with a huff. I had just finished talking to every single member of my family. News spread fast—I was awake, and apparently that meant it was visiting hour for the entire bloodline.

My eyes drifted shut. Oddly enough, I felt exhausted despite having just slept for seven days.

Knock knock knock knock knock—

My eyes snapped open. The knocking was rapid and loud.

"Dad, I told you, I'm fi—" I stopped mid-sentence as the door swung open.

Arms flung around me, and I tumbled backward with a grunt.

"(NAME)!!!" Andrew yelled, grinning like a maniac as he hovered over me. His dark curls were longer, messier—his face brighter than I remembered.

"That's my name," I groaned, looking up at his green eyes, fighting a smile.

"Nice piercing," I commented, nodding at the silver ring in his septum.

"Told you I was getting one," he smirked, pulling me up. I noticed more changes—his curls were edging into mullet territory, a slit in his left brow, multiple earrings. He'd bulked up too. Guess the gym thing wasn't just talk.

"I missed you so much," he said suddenly, more serious now. "I was scared you wouldn't wake up. I didn't know what I'd do."

"I missed you too," I said, wrapping my arms around his neck. He laughed and pulled me closer by the waist.

"Girl, don't lie—you were out cold. You better have dreamt about me." He gave my side a playful squeeze, and I giggled.

"Don't think I did... but maybe?" I shrugged. Still, something felt... strange. My body was firmer. Like I'd been training in my sleep.

Andrew flopped onto my bed beside me. "So, what's it like? Being out for a week? Could you hear us?"

I leaned against the bedframe and rubbed the back of my neck. "Honestly? Nothing. I don't even remember before it happened."

"Really?" he tilted his head. "The night before, we were watching anime. You were raving about smashing half the cast of Attack on Titan."

I stared blankly at him.

"What's Attack on Titan?"

Andrew laughed—until he saw my face.

"You're serious?"

I nodded. He fumbled for his phone and pulled up a picture.

"You're obsessed with these guys," he said, showing me a photo. One tall and blonde, the other shorter with black hair and an exhausted glare.

"Never seen them in my life," I muttered, rubbing my temples. My head pounded again.

"You okay?" Andrew asked, eyes narrowing in concern.

"Just a headache," I assured him, managing a small smile.

He sat beside me, placing a hand on my arm. "I'm here if you need me."

"I know. Thanks."

With a yawn, he stretched out beside me. "Man, I'm beat."

"Same," I sighed.

He raised a brow. "Girl, you just woke up from a seven-day nap. How are you tired?"

I laughed, hugging a pillow to my chest.

"Doctors, family, questions... You're the only semi-normal person I've seen today."

He turned to face me, draping an arm lazily over my stomach.

"Well, I'm happy to nap with my best girl. Just promise you'll wake up this time."

"I'll try," I mumbled, tucking my face into the crook of his neck—something we'd always done. It felt safe.

His arms wrapped around me, warm and protective.

I closed my eyes.

I really hope I'll wake up.
