Chapter Sixteen
Third Person Pov
Katrina - 11 Years Old
A small giggle came out of Mia's mouth as she drew on Katrina's hand with a marker from her Cinderella themed princess bag.
It was truly heartbreaking because even when Katrina felt something in the middle of her slumber she never thought twice about what was happening because she was so used to it. It was sad how familiar and normal horrifying incidents were to her.
She had been roused almost every night by a beating for a small mistake or because of the sexual needs that Cyrus constantly wanted to use her for.
Katrina's body flinched as Mia's hand grazed her hip where the burns that Cyrus had given her with his cigarettes were.
She had taken one of the cigarettes and smoked it because for once she had wanted to be carefree.
She had felt alive for a moment. A moment that she loved. It was special to her.
Katrina had broken the rules and actually made a choice of her own until she realised she wasn't allowed to.
Until he showed her what the repercussions of her actions were.Mia thankfully didn't have to go through the physical and mental torture that a man like Cyrus could inflict on another human's soul because Katrina was always in the way. He always wanted her anyways and when Katrina was around, Mia was left unhurt.
Over the past few months, Katrina had started to become fiercely protective of the little girl with no filter that seemed to consider Katrina as family even before they actually knew each other.
Mia was now staying in Linda's room. Linda had passed away last month but there was no change in anything. Linda never really existed in the first place.
A smile spread across Katrina's face as she happily opened her eyes for the first time to a happy, memorable sight.
Katrina laughed joyfully as the ticklish feeling of the pen along her skin with the words that Mia had written made her laugh.
She had forgotten how it felt to laugh before Mia came.
They both smiled at each other and held hands as they slept in the creaky bed that had faced too much over the years.
"Oh I remembered another riddle. How can a girl go ten days without sleeping?"
"I don't know Mia, how?" Katrina asked light-heartedly.
"She sleeps at night." Mia proclaimed proudly as Katrina giggled.
Mia suddenly clutched Katrina's hand even tighter as she turned to look towards Katrina.
"Kat kat. I don't want to sleep alone tonight."
Katrina knew why Mia wanted to sleep with her. Mia always tried to protect her.
"Mia. It's okay. He comes at night. I need to -"
"No! He can't do that to you. Mrs. Grita and Ms. Verona told all of us that nobody can touch us if we don't like it! I don't like it. I'm not gonna let him do it to you!" Mia's small voice broke as she held onto Katrina fiercely as though if she let her go, she would disappear.
Katrina hugged back the only human she cared about in the world. This little girl had showed her that there was atleast one person in the world who would have her back and that all humans weren't cruel and full of selfishness.
"Mia. Please don't come to me at night. Please" Katrina pleaded desperately to the girl in her arms who was hugging her tightly.
If he ever saw Mia in her room at night, he might hurt her too. Katrina could take it for both of them. She didn't want Mia to get tainted from the sickness that Cyrus seemed to pass around. A rotting dirty evil that she felt would invade her mind because of him.
