Chapter Nineteen

Katrina's Pov - 12 Years Old

"There isn't enough money. We're barely scraping by as it is."

"Yeah I'm trying to somehow get enough food for the kids. I need to get a therapist for Katrina but she doesn't want one. I have so much to do."

Verona's voice was silenced as she listened to the person speaking on the other side of the line.

She let out a deep sigh and answered the other person.

"Yeah they just don't care. Nobody's been helping out or even providing any kind of money. We could barely feed all of them enough yesterday."

I plastered myself to the hidden corner of the wall as I heard her speak.

They didn't have money and they were wasting too much on me too.

I didn't want to be here anyways. I'd deal with it.

I walked away and started to head out the door to take a walk outside.

"Katrina? Where are you going, you have to come eat dinner." I heard Verona ask from behind me, just as I stepped outside.

"I'm going out to walk." I clenched my fists and ran out before she could question me further.

I would come up with an excuse to stay out so that Verona didn't have to worry about feeding me.

I didn't need anyone to do anything for me anyways.

I tugged on the sleeve of my jacket and ignored the bite of the cool air on my hands.

I should try to find some kind of work here. I needed to find something to do or else I'd just have to sit around and wait till nightfall to go back to the orphanage.

I was going to be adopted by next year mostly and I didn't want to stick around and cause more harm to Verona.

All I ever did was sleep now. She kept getting concerned and I didn't want her to. I would leave and act like I was busy.

I kept on walking as I sensed eyes on me. Leering, ugly eyes. Oh I'd like a distraction for sure.

My lips tilted upwards as I walked calmly with even steps, allowing the men trailing me to operate under the guise that I didn't know they were watching me.

I flicked a small blade that was lying on the carpenter's desk from the shop nearby and hid it in my sleeve as I skipped towards the alley nearby.

Perfect.

I smiled to myself as I took in the dimly lit alleyway which was secluded with granite walls that were had every imprint of filth and dirt. The small house next to the alley had nobody living there.

Good. No living witnesses.

I simply leaned against the wall and waited.

I couldn't wait to see what kind of men they were. If they deserved a chance or if they were as vile as I truly imagined them to be.

The first one came and two others followed. Three's a party for sure.

The first one staggered back moderately as he saw me standing there waiting until the other two didn't even bother taking in the entire situation as they smirked and laughed amongst themselves.

"Little girl, you lost?"

"Want us to help you out?"

They laughed and walked closer to me as I simply watched them until a crazed grin appeared across my face as they kept laughing and taking in my entire body.
