"What I don't get," said Harry in a shaking voice, laying down his knife and fork because his hands were trembling too much to hold them steady, "is why they all believed the story when Dumbledore told them..."
He had been going on about some argument with Umbridge he had in class, not in very much detail from him but fortunately Hermione filled me in nicely.
"The thing is, Harry, I'm not sure they did," said Hermione. "Oh, let's get out of here."
She slammed down her own knife and fork; Ron looked sadly at his half-finished apple pie but followed us suit.
"What d'you mean, you're not sure they believed Dumbledore?" Harry asked Hermione.
"Look, You arrived back in the middle of the lawn clutching Cedric's dead body... None of us saw what happened in the maze... We just had Dumbledore's word for it" she said. I had been silent since I had arrived at the great hall for dinner because i already had my share of problems with the too small number of students coming to me for counseling but i indeed was listening.
The common room was almost empty; nearly everyone was still down at dinner which was a relief because i still felt like i couldn't stand the sight of any of my housemates anyway.
I had already managed to fight with Snape twice and it hadn't even been a week since we had come back. I let myself fall absentmindedly on the first armchair. I curled my legs up, hugged the cushion that was previously behind my back and let out a sigh, apparently not high enough to distract them from their Umbridge problems.
"How can Dumbledore have let this happen?" Hermione cried suddenly, making me jump in surprise, I guessed i had gotten distracted for a moment after all.
"How can he let that terrible woman teach us? And in our O.W.L. year too!"
"Well, we've never had great Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers, have we?" said Harry. "You know what it's like, Hagrid told us, nobody wants the job, they say it's jinxed."
"Yes, but to employ someone who's actually refusing to let us do magic! What's Dumbledore playing at?"
"And she's trying to get people to spy for her," said Ron darkly.
"Of course she's here to spy on us all" snapped Hermione.
"Don't start arguing again," said Harry wearily, as Ron opened his mouth to retaliate. "Can't we just... Let's just do that homework, get it out of the way..."
"should we do Snape's stuff first?" Ron said probably thinking i wouldn't notice when he indicated me to Harry hoping they could get me to do their homework for them but i was not Hermione.
"Forget it, i can get you the books but i will not do it for you" I said honestly fairly irritated by their consideration of me when they wanted something.
"Of course, I wasn't suggesting..." he said, his whole face becoming red.
"I think you were" i said suggesting i knew because i could read his mind but i was so far from that room it would've been hard even to slip in one of their heads by mistake.
"I... sorry..." he said looking like a baby caught with his hands in the jam.
I pulled out a book Snape had lended me before summer and that I had been meaning to give back until we had gotten carried away. "here, this will suffice... but DON'T copy the scribbles, those are his notes, he will notice and I'll be in trouble" i recommended putting the book on his lap.
"Sue... is everything okay with you?" Harry asked.
"yes, don't pretend to care, i gave you the book, now let me be" I said probably too irritated.
"look... i know we've been a little too involved but this Umbridge woman..." he said before Hermione silently stood up heading over another group formed by Fred and George and a few first years "...i mean she's really a problem"
"yes, i know" i said simply giving away i did not want to talk hoping he'd get the message.
"okay but-"
"Harry..."
Hermione's quarrel with Fred and George to stop them from giving any more fainting fancies to the first years to test them out had gotten louder than it was possible to ignore so they got our attention.
"...we're paying them, it's not like we're exploiting them" Fred said.
"i don't care it could be dangerous!" she said not willing to give up.
"no because we already tested them on ourselves, it's just to see if they have the same effect on everyone!" George explained.
"you will not be giving anyone else this rubbish!" Hermione ordered resolutely not taking no for an answer.
"or...?" Fred challenged her "you'll give us detention?" he chuckled.
"no... i will write to your mother" she said and i was not expecting that but i figured maybe it was in the prefect's powers to do so and she was not completely out of line.
"you wouldn't..." George said but he did not sound so smug anymore.
"oh yes i would..." Hermione said triumphantly.
With a last threatening look at them, she thrusted Fred's clipboard and the bag of Fancies back into his arms and strolled back to her chair by the fire.
"thank you for backing me up Ron..." she scoffed.
"you handled it just fine by yourself" he said but he was sitting so low in his chair it looked like he hoped it would open and swallow him.
Their eagerness to do homework had vanished quickly and it didn't take long for them to leave the common room. Only Harry stayed in the armchair opposite to me but I was too hypnotized by the cracklings of the fire to pay him any attention at all.
"I am no legilimens" he whispered and hearing him say that in the middle of the common room made me come back from my thoughts just to glare
at him "but i know something's on your mind" he said satisfied he had gotten my attention.
"yes, I do have things on my mind... as well as you do, but it's nothing i can't handle, I just don't know how yet..."
"I know you can handle anything, it's just... I mean, if you want to talk..." he said embarrassedly.
"no, i don't..." i hurried to respond "but if you want to talk more about Umbridge or anything-"
"she gave me five days of detention" he didn't even give me the chance to finish the sentence.
"what on earth did you do to piss her off like that?"
"i did nothing, just spoke honestly and she made it a big deal, she even wrote a note to McGonagall..." he sighed.
"what did McGonagall say?" I asked not believing that she would comply to her madness.
"She offered me a biscuit..." he said incredulously "and she told me i have to be careful around her"
"she's always on your side, Harry but she has no power over other teachers' punishments" I said.
"I know but this woman is enraging... and on top of that there's the fact none believes me so it's always me going mad on other people who 'righteously doubt'"
"I'm sure she's horrible but you can't force people to believe you..." i stopped talking because suddenly an idea came to my mind.
"what?" he asked noticing my face strangely lighting up.
"i... i think i have an idea..." i said.
"an idea for what?"
"to make people believe you... i mean i don't know if they'll believe it either coming from me but..."
"i am not following" he said.
"who else saw what was happening there that night? me, my father was there i saw everything as if i was there..."
"if you start telling you were there they'll come at you even worse than they already do..."
"but i can back it up... i can extract the memory and i can show them..." i said being fully aware of the risks.
"but we'd need a Pensieve and we can't use the one in Dumbledore's office to show a student's murder to... other students..." Harry said and it made sense of course, maybe i had gotten excited too soon.
"well... there could be another way... i'm not sure though i'll need to think about it... probably do some research" i said.
"there's no need for you to go through more trouble for me, if by any chance you got in trouble for this i couldn't forgive myself"
"stop, you're not asking me, i'm offering... we just have to find a way" i said planning to go to the library or maybe pose some vague question to Snape the following day.
"Sue please think about it before you do anything rushed"
"do you know me for my stupid decisions?"
"no... of course not..." he said.
"then a little more faith in me wouldn't harm, we were the only ones who saw... and i don't know how i haven't thought about this before..." i said.
"well... thank you for thinking about it now...
even though a lunatic and a spy don't make much of a good team, but thanks for trying" he said as he got up from the armchair heading to the boys' dormitory. "goodnight Sue"
"goodnight Harry"
