The warmth that had flooded his body drained out of him. It was as if he was standing at Bad Wolf Bay once again. He was left feeling empty and cold and clammy.
It wasn’t until then the Doctor realized there was a hard hand on his shoulder. The Doctor tensed waiting to feel the time energy wash over him as he was sent backwards. The sensation never came.
The Doctor looked at the angel. It had a look of confusion on its face. “Jack?” The Doctor questioned. His voice felt empty.
“Your still here.” Jack confirmed through the com. “So is Ayaria. What’s happened?”
Suddenly it dawned on the Doctor. “We’re in the Tardis! Stupid me.”
“Doctor, why would that make difference?” Jack voice came through.
The Doctor wasn’t particularly in the mood for talking but he launched into an explanation anyway. “The inside of the Tardis is set in a different dimension and fused to an outer shell with some very complicated Gallifrayan technology. The other dimension is not governed by the same rules as this dimension is. It’s all very complicated, but long story short is that the Tardis has a time stream of sorts, but the regular rules of travel within time don’t apply. Everything in here is happening at once for the Tardis. Course it doesn’t look that way from our view. Kind of like how standing on the Earth you wouldn’t know it was round. Well, not really like that. Anyway, the point is that while we stand on one part of the Tardis’s time stream the Tardis is well… what’s the word,” The Doctor paused a minute in his explanation. “singular throughout all of the time. She looks upon every point in the time stream at the same time. That’s how Idris was able to archive what hasn’t even happened.”
“Who’s Idris?” Jack asked cutting off the Doctor’s babble.
“Long story.” The Doctor answered.
Jack continued, not pressing for more on the topic. “Well, take a breath now cause its only so long before the thing thinks of something else to try to get rid of you. How’s Ayaria faring?”
The Doctor glanced to Ayaria in his arms. Her face looked absent and lifeless. She was breathing softly. Would she remember the kiss? Rose hadn’t remembered when she had been the Bad Wolf. “She seems well enough.” The Doctor said quietly.
“Okay, so it looks like all we can do is wait. Hopefully it will take a bit to for the thing to realize that you guys weren’t sent back.” Jack said.
The Doctor sat back against the door with Ayaria’s head in his lap. He smoothed back her hair as he watched the angels. Every time he blinked they changed position. However, they could do nothing more than linger uncertainly around the Doctor. It was certainly something the Doctor was sure he would never see again. He found himself listening to the Tardis’s song. He wondered if he could ever learn to read it as Ayaria could.
And he thought about Ayaria. His mind going in endless circles. Who was she? What was her connection to Rose? The Bad Wolf? The kiss? All these questions and no answers. He hoped he would get his answers soon.
Suddenly he heard the song dip dangerously and for a minute there was only a single stretched low note. Then it burst to life. The song richocheted through the scales hitting joyful note after joyful note.
“Doctor! The Tardis has fully awoken!” Jack’s voice came through the com.
“I know.” The Doctor whispered. “Ayaria did it.”
He looked down at the girl thinking she should awaken any second. Her breathing was hard and shallow though. Her face wore a pained expression. The Doctor’s eyes widened.
