"What the frick? You never said you had a magical shield before." I frowned, tapping Rory affectionately on the nose as he giggled and pushed me lightly. I raised my eyebrow and dropped the lightsaber I'd been duelling him with, unimpressed by his blatantly obvious rule changing and cheating at the game."It was my secret powers." He smirked cheekily, letting out a battle cry as he thrust his own foam sword into my stomach, and I gasped, doubling over as I choked dramatically and began to slump to the floor, croaking my vow to take my revenge on him with my last dying breath.
"Rory, honey. Time for bed." Angie called out as she stepped into the room, smiling warmly at the two of us surrounded in various toys and such I'd pulled from the box, and me laying dead on the floor with a proud looking little Rory sat on my chest, arms high in victory.
I opened my eyes and sat up, throwing Angie an apologetic glance for the mess I'd made, but she just chuckled and waved me off.
"Uh oh...Auntie Rory, you have to go bed now." He sighed, poking my forehead as I turned back to him, pulling a face.
"Uh no, I don't think so. I think it's little Rory that needs to go to sleep now. Cause like- you killed me in battle, and everyone knows dead people don't have to sleep." I waggled my finger at him, hoisting him up onto my hip as he pulled a sulky face and glared at Angie. She just chuckled and pulled him from my grasp, struggling a little with the steadfast hold he had on my shirt.
" 'Tend I gave you a potion and now you come back to life so we have to finish the game now." Rory piped up, trying to squirm out of Angies grip as he poured an imaginary liquid over me. We let out a laugh, and I followed them both through the door, squishing Rory's cheeks before he batted my hands away.
"Yeah buddy, I've sorta had my fill of 'coming back to life' the past week and I'm kinda tired." I sighed, smiling softly at the little five year old who suddenly looked a little more exhausted than before, his head flopping onto Angie's shoulder as he pouted at me from behind her.
She turned around as we reached the stairs and jostled Rory lightly in her arms.
"Say goodnight to Auntie Rory, sweetie." She muttered softly, careful to stay quiet as we were hovering right by the living room where Jack was sound asleep, holding on tight to Abby as she quietly read her book.
"Night big Rory." He sighed wearily, and I ruffled his hair, blowing a kiss as he was carried up the stairs.
"Goodnight little Rory."
I sighed and turned to the doorway, stepping forward and allowing the warm, stretched glazing of light to sink through me from the living room. Peering in, I looked over a softening sight, seeing Abby curled up on the sofa between my brother's arms, book open in front of her as her eyes skidded across the page.
She looked up as I walked in, taking my phone off the shelf and sliding down to sit on the floor opposite the couch. She gave me a gentle smile and closed her book as I waved, already regretting disturbing her.
"Hi honey, you want me to make us some drinks?" She offered, beginning to pull herself out of Jack's embrace but I quickly waved her off and stood myself.
"No no I'll make them Abs, don't worry about it. Stay there with your man." I chuckled quietly, walking over to the kitchen.
"You've been so good with Rory. Thank you." She commented quietly and I hovered by the kitchen entryway, turning around to glance at her, sitting and smiling peacefully.
"He's a great kid, and you guys really needed your time together." I nodded, before disappearing into the kitchen to knock up some hot chocolate.
