It was a sunny day when I first saw him, sitting on a bench, eyes glued to his PSP. I still remember my first impression: timid, boring, lazy. Honestly, I didn't even know he existed until that moment.
We were total opposites. I'm a happy-go-lucky guy, captain of the volleyball club, and both girls and boys go crazy over me. My life is loud, full of energy, and I've always enjoyed the attention.
That's why I never expected the day would come when I'd turn into a stupid stalker. Who would've thought the famous Kuroo Tetsurou would be secretly crushing on someone?
"K-Kuroo-senpai, can we take a picture with you?" a group of girls asked, eyes sparkling. I flashed them my best smile, the one I knew melted hearts, and they all blushed.
"Sure," I said, as they hurried to pull out their phones and snap photos with me.
I was busy entertaining my fangirls when someone caught my eye. There he was again, sitting on the same bench, PSP in hand, completely absorbed in his game. I didn't understand why I was so drawn to him. Still, I couldn't resist.
I smirked and called out, "Yow, chibi." He slowly turned his head toward me, wearing that trademark lazy expression. "Wanna take a picture with me, too?" I asked, plastering on my most smug smile.
He stared at me, nonchalantly, almost bored, for a solid minute before letting out a sigh.
"No." Then he stood up and walked away.
What the-?
No one had ever rejected me before. Students on and off campus would beg to take a photo with me. Apparently, he was the exception. A slow smile crept across my lips. Love at first sight? Nah, too cliché. How about... love at first rejection?
My morning routine started at six sharp, slipping a note I'd written the night before into his locker, trying to look casual about it. It was the only way I could reach him, since talking to him face-to-face felt impossible now.
I'm the mighty Kuroo, captain of the volleyball club... but ever since that first encounter, I've been too nervous to even look him in the eye.
"Still doing that?" I nearly jumped out of my skin at Yaku's voice behind me. Quickly, I hid the note and pretended nothing happened.
"Doing what?" I asked, forcing an innocent look.
He raised a brow. "You're acting like a lovesick kitten." A love-what now?
"Shut up, you docosahexaenoic acid. What about you, huh? Crushing on Lev but too insecure about your heig-" I didn't get to finish before his foot connected with my shin.
"Shut up! We're talking about you, not me!" Whoa. The tiny devil had come out.
I headed to the classroom with my whole team behind me-and, of course, the usual trail of fangirls following us. The moment I walked in, my eyes landed on him. Kenma. Sitting in his chair, PSP in hand, completely lost in his game.
I tried to act cool when I noticed him glance in our direction, hoping to impress him. But all I got was his usual annoyed look. What the hell is with this guy?
Later, during practice in the gym, I secretly scribbled a note: Take care on your way home. Cringey as hell, but whatever.
Yaku caught me and started giggling quietly, so I decided to return the favor. I tilted my head toward Lev-who was busy practicing with Tora, and grinned when Yaku's face turned into a red tomato.
When practice ended, I headed to the main lockers to grab my stuff... and that's when I saw it. A crumpled piece of paper in the trash. I picked it up. Familiar handwriting. My note. The first one he had ever thrown away. For a second, it actually stung.
Alright, so he was getting fed up. That only meant one thing-time to step up my game.
That night, I wrote a new note: MEET ME AT THE ROOFTOP AFTER CLASS. I'LL BE WAITING. This wasn't going to be some endless, grade-schooler crush anymore. I was going to do something about it.
The next day after classes, I stood on the rooftop, a volleyball in hand to calm my nerves. My heart was pounding like crazy.
"Damn, why am I so nervous?" I muttered, lightly punching the ball. "Geez, relax, man." It felt like forever before I finally heard the door creak open. I turned, and there he was. The world slowed.
He scanned the area, clearly surprised to see me. "I'm sorry for disturbing," he said, already turning to leave.
"Don't leave," I called out, trying to sound casual despite my racing pulse.
He frowned slightly. "I'm sorry if I disturbed you. Someone left a note in my locker saying to meet him here." I couldn't help smiling. Why so cute, chibi-chan?
"I know," I said, pulling the crumpled note from my pocket, the one he had tossed yesterday. "This and the others were all from me."
His eyes widened. We stared at each other, and for a second, I expected him to smile and run toward me like in the movies. But real life? Not so predictable.
"Stop pranking me then," he said flatly.
I chuckled. "Who said I'm pranking you?" I started walking toward him. He backed up until his shoulders hit the wall.
"W-What are you doing?" he stammered. I just wanted to close the gap between us. My hands found his cheeks, and my eyes dropped to his lips. They were magnetic.
Without thinking twice, I leaned in and kissed him-just for a second. His lips were the softest thing I'd ever felt. I wanted more, but I forced myself to pull back.
"I like you, Kenma," I said, smiling. "I've liked you for a while now."
