I turn away slightly from her, hoping she doesn't see me. But as soon as the elevator doors close, she coughs and says, "Ally?"
I turn to her, sighing. The other three look to me for guidance but I keep looking at my mother. At Natasha. "Hey, Mom," I say awkwardly.
She glares at me. "What the hell has been happening, Ally? You broke into the Pentagon! You're on the run from SHIELD?" Natasha snaps. "Why?"
"Um, Ruby, please explain," I mutter but no explanation comes. I glance at the genius and she shrugs at me.
"This is your mother. Explain it yourself." She says. "And, hi there, Mrs Barton."
"Ms Romanoff," Natasha corrects her. "I don't go by my husbands name. I don't think it suits me."
"Yet you gave it me," I roll my eyes.
"Your father is a well respected SHIELD agent, Ally! Think of having his name and genes as a privilege!" Natasha says.
"Exactly. He's an agent of SHIELD. Being Ally Romanoff would have created a lot more fear in people when they hear my name," I smirk. Ruby grins but Natasha doesn't look amused.
"Shut up, Ally. And come home."
"Home?" I laugh bitterly. "I don't have a home with you. My home is with Ruby and Libby and Sam. My home isn't with liars and spies."
"We're all liars," Libby interrupts me. Natasha turns on her instead of me.
"Libby, you were so sweet. You were the kind one. The sensible one. Please...your parents are worried!" Natasha pleads. I don't try to convince Libby otherwise. My mother doesn't know how much Libby has changed. How much we've all changed. I'm not as hateful as I was but I still dislike my parents. Distrust them. Ruby isn't as cocky but she is still a smart mouth who uses her powers for good. Sam is questioning everything, as is Libby, and that usually gives people a reality check. And personality change.
"I'm staying with these guys," Libby says. "And please tell my father something from me."
The elevator doors open and we're at the morgue. Sam is clearly making an escape route with the way her eyes are moving quickly around.
"Which father?" Natasha asks. Ruby leans against me and I grab her wrist to steady her. She slides her hand up and holds my hand instead.
"Either. It doesn't matter."
"Okay. What's the message?" Natasha says. The agent beside her tenses slightly.
"Lies are for the weak and our family is dying," Libby says. I stare at her. "Tell them thank you for lying to me. Because having the truth told to me by someone who wanted to use it to hurt me, that hurt more than anything."
In an instant, we're moving out. Sam pulls Libby out and I throw myself and Ruby on the ground, below the range of guns if the agent decides to fire. There's a silence and I sit up, evaluating all the aches in my body.
Natasha looks at me, her eyes hard and cold. "This is your choice, and I can't stop you, can I?" She says.
"No. You can't."
"Ally, I-" she says then the agent beside he gets his gun out and shoots her. I scream and lurch forward as my mother falls to the ground, clutching her bloody stomach.
"Mom! Mom!" I scream over and over and someone's holding me back. It's Ruby, her warm hands holding my arm. Then Sam is slamming on the elevator doors as they close, yelling meaningless words at the doors. Libby collapses beside me and strokes my hair, tries to comfort me, but I can't hear her. Everything is just a blurry mess and I'm fading away so fast.
I'm still screaming. I'm still crying. Then my scream stops and someone whispers. I whisper. My voice is strange and it hurts.
"They all need to die."
