Ruby wakes up, holding her head with a pained expression. She must see the hospital equipment around her because her eyes widen. "I'm...you took me to hospital? Are you freaking mad? The whole of SHIELD is looking for us and-"
"Shh," I whisper. "I'll explain everything later, Rachel. Lisa and Sarah are getting some coffee." Comprehension dawns on her face.
"Coulda picked some better names," she mutters. "Lisa and Sarah? Honestly, A-"
"Alice," I smile sweetly at her as a nurse comes in. "She's woken up," I tell the nurse. "Is there anything you need to do? When can we go?"
"She can stay until 5 tonight and then we'll let you go." The nurse says. I sigh. We can't afford to wait another six hours. SHIELD will be after us soon. I couldn't stop them from taking Ruby's photo for their records and they'll have tracked us from that place.
Finally the nurse goes and Sam walks in. "We have to go. Now."
"She's not well enough yet," I argue but Ruby attempts to sit up, holding onto my arm. I want to help her but instead I force myself to keep looking at Sam. "Why?"
"Coulson, Romanoff and some other agents are in the lobby. Libby went to grab us some nurse outfits and doctor coats." Sam throws me my leather jacket. "Stuff this down your top and spread it out so it makes you look fatter."
"If my mother is there she will notice me," I tell her but do as she says. It doesn't do much and you can see the zips poking out of my shirt. I take it off and hold it instead.
"Just leave it," Ruby mutters as she gets up.
"I can't. Clint gave it to me. I mean, Dad...Dad gave it to me." I say miserably. I can't leave the jacket behind. It's the only sentimental thing I allow myself to keep.
"Give it here then," Sam sighs and she puts it on. "If Romanoff recognises you, we'll teleport away."
"You stole my teleport prototype from the lab?" Ruby sounds annoyed. "That doesn't even work yet! Why did you steal it? You better not break it. It's made of vibranium, you know. Rarest-"
"-metal on Earth," Libby finishes the sentence. Ruby eyes her, apprehensively. "I'm not going to beat you up, Stark. Don't worry."
"I'm not worried. I'll put on one of my suits. We could go a few rounds."
I smirk. "You have an Ironman suit?"
"Tony insisted on making me one," she snaps.
"Rich girl privileges," Sam says.
I laugh. "You're a princess," I remind her.
"Not anymore, though. I'm not the heir to the throne anymore. After Grandfather dies, it will be Thor and then who knows?" Sam says. "Maybe Loki."
"Can you imagine that?" Libby teases then she turns serious. "Let's get out of here. The SHIELD agents snooping around here are giving me the jitters."
We all nod in consent and I help Ruby to put on her boots. She's still in a hospital gown but that can't be helped. They put her clothes in a locker. I put on a green uniform over my clothes- luckily the pants stretch over mine- and the others do the same then we're ready to go. My heart's hammering in my chest as we walk out calmly to the elevator. They'll never think we would take it, they'll all be waiting around the stairs. Libby presses the button and the elevator doors open. It's empty. Thank God. We all pile in and I press the -1 button.
"The morgue," I explain. "No-one will be searching there. Too morbid."
"Oh," Sam says but she gulps. I forget that Ruby and Sam haven't been trained for this. They've lived lives of luxury and whilst they've had their fair share of heartache, who hasn't? It comes with the job when you're daughters of superheroes.
"It'll be fine," Libby comforts them. That's her job. The kind one. I'm the tough one. Ruby's the smart one. Sam's the planning one.
The elevator doors open and two people step in. I tense up immediately. She doesn't look at us. She might be under heavy disguise in a floral blouse and skirt but I'd recognise my mother anywhere.
