"Miss Odinson," the voice says. My name echoes through the room and I bite my lip in worry. "Let's keep this short and not so sweet because you girls are about to be rescued."
That doesn't comfort me.
"Daughter of Thor Odinson..." The smirk is apparent in his voice. "Well...you're not."
"what do you mean?" I ask.
"Your mother, Jane Foster, had you in the winter. That's why your father always jokes that you are impervious to the cold. He and your mother say that you were toughened as a baby. That is what he believes. That isn't what she believes. Ten months before that, your mother and another man had gone to his chambers. She always kept it a secret except from Darcy and Selvig. In one of her letters to her friend, Darcy, she mentioned that it was a heat of the moment decision. And a mistake."
"Who-who was it?" I demand but my throat is dry so it comes out as more of a croak.
"Loki," it says. I fall. One minute I'm gasping for breath then I'm on the floor, crying. My uncle cannot be my father. He cannot be. He just can't. Please. God. No.
"He's not. You said ten months. You said ten months!"
"That's what your mother thought. But the baby was late. A month late. Once you were born however, it was apparent who your father was. You had green eyes and pale skin. You didn't look like Thor. And you know what happened next, don't you?"
I look up from my position on the floor as Libby holds my hand comfortingly. Ruby and Ally are sat against the walls, looking sympathetic. They don't know how this feels. My whole world has been ripped apart. I think of my kind and gentle father.
"Then Loki came back, didn't he? He came to Asgard and he fought Thor. Loki doesn't know about you. So he fought Thor and then your mother intervened. She was possessed. By a demon. It entered Asgard when Loki did. She wasn't herself. She was about to kill Thor when Loki killed her. He killed Jane Foster to protect his brother. The demon died as she did. Thor never forgave him after that. He banished Loki. You were brought up to hate him. How does it feel knowing he's your father?"
"Stop it, just stop it," Ally snaps. There's a brief silence and I wipe away my tears and stand up. I won't let this voice bully me. I was Thor's daughter...now I'm Loki's daughter. My mother cheated. The man who brought me up isn't my father. My real father killed my mother. My real father was my uncle. Now Thor is my uncle.
"SHIELD are here," the voice suddenly says. "I must go. Toodles."
There's a burst of static then nothing. Ruby looks alarmed. "I'm sorry, Sam. I am. But we have to go now."
Libby frowns. "Why? We're being rescued."
"We're being arrested, kiddo." Ruby smirks. I smile at the offended look on Libby's face. I store the new information in my brain for later. "Anyone got a safe house?"
"I know one," I say and Ruby nods at me.
"Let's go," she says. She claps me on the back as she walks past and Ally nods at me. These are signs of respect. I'm one of them now.
For once in my life, I feel like I really belong.
