Within seconds of arriving at Alec’s home, I felt comforted by the familiar pictures hanging on the walls and on the mantle, as I looked around the living room, whilst I was shivering and dripping rainwater onto the carpet.
I felt at ease here, for the first time in days. And yet I couldn’t help but be a little apprehensive. I hadn’t talked to Alec in what seemed like a lifetime. It felt strange, not knowing how to be around him or what to even say to him.
“Here, dry yourself off the best you can,” Alec spoke softly. I turned around to see that he had returned from where he had disappeared to. In his hands, was a large, dark blue towel, which he held out to me.
“Thanks,” I muttered quietly. As I wrapped the towel around the ends of my hair, to make them merely damp instead of drenched with water, I couldn’t stop myself from shivering furiously.
“Come here,” Alec said as he walked over to me and picked up my backpack from where it sat on the floor. He then guided me by my elbow to the stairs. When we reached the upper landing, he led me down the small hall and into a room which was painted in colours of blues and whites. The walls were covered in posters of rock bands and motorcycles, as well as a few pictures of Alec’s friends and one on his family, including his sister, brother-in-law and his niece. The room itself was a mess of shirts on the floor around his closet, books and papers and magazines of motorcycles on his desk, with pens and pencils laying everywhere.
“Nice room,” I couldn’t help but say. “I see you went you went for the organized mess look.”
I heard him chuckle slightly from where he was bent over a small chest of drawers, which he was currently rooting around in.
“To each their own,” he said quietly.
He turned and placed a bundle of clothes into my hands. I looked at him confused.
“You need something dry to change into. Can’t have you dying on me,” he said. I looked up and saw a gleam in his eyes, but by the next second it was gone. “Dry yourself off and get changed. I’ll be back in a second.”
With that, he stepped out of his bedroom and closed the door behind him. It was then that I noticed I was really starting to get cold and so I took his advice and stripped out of my soaked clothes and dried myself with the towel he gave me. I then took the clothes, which turned out to be blue checked pajama bottoms and a white log sleeved top. The bottoms pooled around my feet and the sleeves of the top were so long that I had to roll them back a few times in order to have my hands free.
As I loosely dried my hair with the towel, I looked around his room closely, noting the names of the bands he liked and the books he read. He had good taste, and was certainly intelligent. As I was looking at some picture pinned up on a pin board, there was a knock on the door, which slowly began to open.
“Christ, I know you’re small, but you look like a kid in my clothes,” he said, his lips twitching ever so slightly.
“Your clothes are too big,” I responded, with a little frown.
“Or you’re just small.”
“What, you’re just..” I stopped short when I saw a small smile on his face, as he gently shook his head at me.
“I figured you’d need something to warm you up,” Alec said as he walked into his room. It was then that I noticed him carrying two mugs in his hands. He sat down on his bed, surprisingly, the only part of his room that was organized.
“Sit down,” he instructed with a tilt of his head. I sat down near the pillows on his bed and took one of the offered mugs. I took a small sip and tasted hot chocolate, but it had a kick. I looked back at Alec, only to find that he was already looking at me.
