Chapter Three

Jackson and I walked to the ice cream parlor across the road from his house, Jimmy's Malt Shop. Jimmy's has the best ice cream and milkshakes in town.

"How many days are you going to give me lessons on standing up to myself?" I asked.

"As many days as it takes you to finally stand up for your self," Jackson while spooning his chocolate ice cream into his mouth.

I laughed. He looked at me like I was stupid and muttered,"What?"

"You make me laugh," I said.

"Well isn't that a good thing?" Jackson asked.

"If we were in a relationship yeah. But as a friendship I think it's a good thing that you make me laugh," I told him.

He didn't say anything back. Does Jackson like me like that? Does he have a crush on me? No he possibly can't. Why would he have a crush on me? I'm nothing more than ugly and not perfect. I've never been perfect. I'll most likely never be perfect. I better stop thinking this. We are just friends and nothing more.

"So how are you?" I asked breaking the awkward silence.

"Good, you?" he asked.

"Great." Just as I said that Sutton walked in with her new boyfriend, Kaleb. It seems to me she always has a new boyfriend. She always has one every week. Why would a person want a new boyfriend every week? Couldn't you just stay with the same guy until you fell out of love or he cheated on you?

I guess Sutton saw me because she started to walk my way. "Oh crap Jackson let's go."

"Why?" He asked just as Sutton got to our table.

"Oh look who it is, Martha the brainyack and Jackson her lover."

"He is not my boyfriend Sutton. He is only my friend."

"You're lying Martha. No one likes liars."

"No one likes a whore either but apparently people can't see past your hair and big boobs," I said.

Jackson and Sutton just stood there and stared at me. All I said was the truth.

"Oh the brainyack has a mouth. If I were you, I'd be watching your back at school."

"Oh is that a threat? I am totally scared right now."

"You should be because it is a threat."

"Let's go Martha." Jackson said. I got up from the table and left with Jackson. I didn't have anything else to say to Sutton so I left her standing there.

"That was awesome Martha, but I think I might need to teach you self defense."

"Yeah you better. I think she is going to pounce on me when I least expect it."
