"Uh, hey, Ms. Y\L/N?" That little voice squeezes my heart and I look up to see my favorite student with his recently graded paper in his hands. Yes, I'm aware teachers aren't supposed to have favorites, but that's bullshit. Ask any high school teacher out of class and they'll tell you their favorite student. I guarantee it. Besides, hard workers have always caught my eye and Peter Parker is one of the hardest workers out there.
"Yes, Peter?" I respond softly, putting down the new stack of papers they handed in today to give the young boy my complete attention. Golden brown waves fall across his forehead as he fidgets constantly, folding a corner of his short essay over and over again.
"I was a little confused about my grade for this and was wondering if you could explain it to me?" He looks a little nervous, but I smile and nod.
"Sure, may I?" I hold my hand out and he instantly perks up, then hands it to me. "Alright, go ahead and sit." I gesture to the stool beside my desk and he sits obediently. The paper is only a page long, but has a C circled in the corner of the page. For a straight A student this must've dented his self-esteem a bit. "So, can you remember what this paper was about?"
Peter nods instantly. "Yeah. It was about that fun test we took about what kind of dog we were." He smiles brightly at the memory.
"Right. Now, you started off really well. It's just when you get to your last paragraph..." I trail off and hand the paper back to him. "Your comma usage is spotty and the whole paragraph is distracted. I believe there's even a sentence that changes from talking about dogs to talking about equations." My voice is gentle and my expression is a little concerned. Understanding passes across Peter's face.
"Oh right. I was switching between doing this and science homework. Sorry. Thanks." He hops up and heads to the door, but I'm right behind him.
"Peter, are you doing alright?" He turns back towards me looking a little nervous. "You know I tutor as well after school and would be happy to help you if needed. If you're too busy, then during study hall." I try offering my help and he seems to think on it a moment.
"I think I'll just try doing one piece of homework at a time for a while. Thank you though." He nods at me and I watch him scurry out and down the hall. Sighing, I watch him go before turning back to the pile of papers on my desk. While I'm proud of the internship he's gotten, I've noticed him dozing in class and his work has suffered quite a bit lately. I sit down at my desk and sigh. I do hope things change for the better.
*Four F's Later*
I can't help but feel I'm betraying Peter a little as I sit waiting at my desk for him and his guardian to show. Four failing grades is just so out of character for him, so I felt I had to talk to someone looking after him. The door opens and I stand, looking at Peter a little apologetically, but he looks anything but. His eyes are on the man just behind him. None other than Mr. Tony Stark himself struts through the door in a spotless black suit and burgundy tie.
His eyes widen when he sees me and a charming smile appears on his face as he offers me his hand. "Tony Stark. May couldn't be here today, so I'm stepping in as Peter's guardian." He explains as I accept his hand and shake it once.
"Actually, that's perfect. Nice to meet you." I greet him and gesture for them both to sit. They sit at desks and Tony blinks.
"This takes me back. Although, I was meeting with teachers for other reasons than grades most of the time." Tony teases Peter while Peter shrinks a little in his seat.
"Mr. Stark, I wanted to-"
"Tony, please." He corrects me and leans forward in his seat a bit. Those eyes are bright and burning as he looks at me and I find myself lost a moment before continuing.
