"Look, it isn't a crime to want to spend time with your friends. He's the one who encouraged you to do this in the first place! He'll come if you just invite him." I roll my eyes at my friend. She's heard me go back and forth on inviting Sam Wilson for days, so I guess I can't be too upset with her for snapping.

"Christina, he isn't just the guy who comes to visit my desk in the morning anymore. He's an Avenger, he has more important things to do than come see me sing at a crappy bar." I inform her, my tone firm. She sighs exasperatedly at me as I shove another batch of cookies in the oven. I bake when I'm stressed.

"You're forgetting to mention how many times he would visit you during the day," She continues to harass me, not giving it up.

"Chris..." I warn her, but I'm smiling just a little.

"Twice every day. Not to mention the breaks between talks where he'd just pass by you with a smile instead of stopping to flirt." Chris sits back on the stool at the bar where she always watches me cook.

I shake my head at her, smiling. Wiping my hands on my apron, I take my phone out of my pocket. "If this will make you shut up about it, I'll do it." I press a button and it instantly dials Sam's number. I bounce my leg up and down nervously as the phone rings. He answers just before the second.

"Hey sweetheart, how are you?" A smile comes over my face the minute I hear his bubbly voice and Chris grins smugly at me. I point from her to the oven to get her to watch the cookies and go into my bedroom. I can't talk to him while in the same room with her.

"Hi, Sam. I'm doing well, although I miss your visits at the VA." I tease him just a little and sit on the end of my bed as he laughs.

"I'll bet not as much as I miss your singing." I'm smiling at the floor like a fool at his words, but he brings me back to why I called.

"Oh, well this is good timing then. I actually got a gig tonight at a local bar." I tell him shakily, whether from inviting him or the gig itself, I have no clue.

"Of course, you did. You're too good to pass up." He says it so matter-of-factly, but my face gets hot when I imagine him saying that in a different situation.

I clear my throat before continuing. "Thanks. Actually, I was wondering if you wanted to come? I understand if you don't want to or don't have the time, you've gotten a lot busier since the times you visited me at the reception desk." I smile fondly at the memory. No one could make me laugh as much as Sam. I missed that.

"You kidding? I'll be the first one there. Just tell me the name of the bar and the time." He says instantly.

"Really?" I blurt out without thinking. His chuckle over the phone is the only thing that keeps me from hanging up. God I'm an idiot.

"Of course, sweetheart. I'd love to bring Steve too, if that's okay. I've been telling him all about the set of pipes you have. I'm sure he'd love to come see you." He talks about me? My mouth has formed a little o in surprise and it takes me a minute to respond.

"Yeah, yeah, you can bring Steve. I'd love to see him again," Steve had dropped by the VA to talk to Sam and spoke to me for a few minutes. He's kind and sweet, then sassy as hell when in Sam's presence. "Uh, the bar is called the Four Clubs and I'm singing at eight." I tell him. He hums happily and the grin on my face grows. "I guess I'll see you tonight then." I finish awkwardly and get another laugh out of him.

"Can't wait." He says quietly and we both hang up at the same time. I shut my eyes and smile, falling back on my bed with a small oomph. Thinking about the way he says my name and that charming smile of his makes me hot all over. My eyes snap open when I think about what on earth I'm going to wear.
