Kelly's POV:
The silence he left behind felt louder than anything that had just happened.
I stayed exactly where I was for a few seconds after he moved away from me, my body still frozen in the position he'd left it in, like if I shifted even slightly it would make everything real in a way I wasn't ready to face yet. My chest was rising unevenly, my breath shallow, and it took me a moment to even register the fact that he was gone, that the door had closed, that I was alone again.
And then it hit me all at once.
Heat rushed to my face so quickly it made my head spin, my hands immediately coming up to cover my mouth like I could somehow take the words back, like I could physically stop them from ever existing. But it was too late. I'd said them. I'd meant them, too, and that was the part that made something twist painfully in my chest.
"Oh my God..." I whispered into my hands, my voice barely steady as I shook my head, backing away slightly like I needed distance from the space itself, from the memory of what had just happened.
I had never—
Not like that.
Not even close.
And the fact that it had been him made it worse in a way I couldn't fully explain, because it wasn't just about the moment, it was about everything leading up to it, everything tangled and confusing and completely out of my control. The way he looked at me, the way he touched me, the way my body had responded without hesitation like it didn't care about logic or fear or the situation I was in.
Like it didn't care that he was the one who took me.
My stomach turned at the thought, a wave of something sharp and uncomfortable settling deep inside me as I dropped my hands, pacing the room now because standing still felt impossible.
"What is wrong with me?" I muttered under my breath, dragging a hand through my hair as frustration and embarrassment mixed into something heavier.
Because I hadn't stopped it.
That was the truth.
I could've pulled away. I could've said something. I could've done anything other than lean into it the way I did, the way I let myself get lost in it like none of this was real, like he wasn't who he was.
Like I wasn't here because of him.
A sharp knock at the door made me jump slightly, my head snapping toward it as my heart picked up again, a different kind of tension settling in now.
"Go away," I called, my voice tighter than I intended.
The door opened anyway.
Of course it did.
Adam leaned against the frame, his usual relaxed posture completely at odds with the way I felt right now, his eyes scanning the room before landing on me, his expression shifting just slightly as he took me in properly.
"Well," he said slowly, "this feels... tense."
I didn't respond, turning away from him instead, not wanting to deal with him right now, not wanting to deal with anyone.
"Did something happen?" he asked, stepping inside like he had every right to be there.
"Nothing happened," I replied quickly.
"Right," he said, clearly not believing me. "And I'm the king of England."
I rolled my eyes, even though the movement felt weak. "What do you want, Adam?"
