Cade's POV:
The second that location came through, I stopped thinking and started moving because thinking has never helped in situations like this and hesitation gets people buried. Men like me don't survive by standing around weighing possibilities while time slips through our fingers, and whatever had been sitting in my chest since seeing that picture of Kelly chained to a wall had turned into something colder now, something sharp that sat under my skin and made every second feel too slow.
The warehouse sat near the south docks where half the buildings looked abandoned and the other half were used by people who didn't want questions asked, which made it exactly the kind of place Anissa would use because she was always paranoid enough to hide behind dirt and shadows. By the time we arrived, I already had men surrounding every exit and every side entrance while Derrick fed information through an earpiece and Adam loaded his gun beside me with far more force than necessary.
Neither of them were joking anymore.
Neither of them were talking much either.
That alone told me enough.
"East side's covered," Derrick said while looking down at his phone briefly. "We've got eight around back and another six moving around the perimeter."
Adam looked over at me while sliding another magazine into place and shook his head slowly. "I swear to God if that woman touched Kelly—"
"She did," I interrupted flatly.
Adam looked at me.
Then his jaw tightened. Then he looked away.
I knew that whatever I had seen in Kelly, I wasn't the only one.
She's special.
I pushed through the warehouse doors hard enough that they slammed violently against concrete walls, the sound echoing through the building as shouting immediately broke out somewhere further inside. Footsteps started moving from every direction almost instantly, but my men were already flooding through every entrance and hallway before Anissa's people even had time to react.
Gunfire exploded around us.
People started dropping.
I barely noticed.
One of Anissa's men appeared from a doorway on my right and raised his weapon, "I think i'm gonna go have some fun with our new toy." The man smirked and it made my skin scrawl and rage pool in the pit of my stomach.
I quickly aimed my gun down and shot him.
Right where it fucking hurts.
His dick.
He dropped to the floor, screaming in complete agony and I slowly approached him, smiling at the sound of his agonising wails and leaned down to his face.
"Do you want to know what happens when someone threatens what's mine?" I asked calmly. He looked me dead in the eyes and I stared right back into his watery, blood-shot ones.
"This."
And with that I blew his fucking brains out.
I got up and searched every room to find her, witnessing Adam on my way, I watched him grab one of them by the back of his shirt and slam him against a wall before pulling the trigger like he was swatting away an inconvenience.
I had known those two most of my life and they acted like complete fucking idiots ninety percent of the time, but when things turned serious they became something else entirely.
I stepped into a room and I saw her. Anissa.
She didn't look arrogant or strong, I saw the fear all over her face.
Around her, my men had already blocked every exit while Adam and Derrick stood further back with guns still raised, and blood covered parts of the concrete floor beneath the bodies of her people.
She looked around quickly before her eyes landed on me.
"Cade," she started carefully, trying to straighten herself slightly, "this isn't what—"
I continued walking and she stopped.
Cowering below me, knowing she lost.
I turned my head slightly because then I saw Kelly.
She was laying on the floor behind Anissa completely motionless, blood spread across the side of her head and staining parts of her clothes while strands of her hair stuck to her face.
Everything inside me stopped.
I don't know why.
I don't know what exactly happened inside my head.
"You hurt her." I said emotionlessly.
Without hesitation, I shot a bullet through Anissa's head. I feel somewhat guilty that Kelly has never known the love that parents should give.
I walked past her dead body, straight to Kelly.
I dropped beside her immediately and slid one hand beneath her head carefully because there was blood everywhere and I hated that I noticed how pale she looked beneath all of it. I wasn't looking at the beautiful olive skin I had seen before, she looked cold, almost lifeless.
I hated noticing the bruises.
I hated noticing her wrists.
I hated all of it.
People get hurt all the time around me. People die around me all the time.
I've watched worse things happen without blinking.
So I couldn't understand why my chest suddenly felt too tight. I couldn't understand why seeing her laying there felt wrong in ways I couldn't explain.
I looked down at her face and brushed blood away from her skin carefully with my thumb before realising what I was doing and immediately stopping myself.
Because I don't do this.
I don't sit around holding people. I don't stare at people like losing them would matter and I definitely don't feel whatever the fuck this was.
Behind me I heard Adam exhale quietly.
"Damn," he muttered.
Derrick looked over at me once and raised an eyebrow slightly.
I looked back at him immediately.
"What."
His mouth twitched slightly.
"Nothing."
I narrowed my eyes.
"Say it."
Derrick lifted both hands slightly and shook his head while Adam grinned somewhere behind him.
"No," Adam said slowly. "I actually think we'll let you figure this one out yourself."
I stared at both of them for a moment before looking back down at Kelly again.
"I'll tell Sasha to have first aid ready by the time we get back" Derrick stated.
Then I tightened my grip around her hand slightly without even realising I was doing it.
