Kelly's POV:
Everything hurt.
Not in one place, not in the kind of way where I could point to something and say there, but everywhere, like pain had settled into my bones and spread itself through every part of me while I was unconscious. My head felt heavy, my thoughts slow and disoriented as I forced my eyes open, immediately wincing when the dim light above me stabbed into my vision.
The first thing I noticed was the cold.
The second thing I noticed was the metal digging into my wrists.
My breathing stopped.
For a moment I just stared, my brain lagging behind reality as I looked up at my arms stretched above me, chains wrapped tightly around my wrists and bolted into a concrete wall behind me.
No.
No no no.
Panic hit me instantly.
I pulled hard without thinking, ignoring the sharp burn that shot through my arms as the chains rattled violently against the wall. The metal bit harder into my skin but didn't move even slightly, and that was somehow worse because for one stupid second I had actually thought I could break free.
I slowly look up after hearing faint footsteps and My mother stood across the room watching me.
Anissa.
Perfect black suit, perfect hair, perfect makeup, looking like she had just walked out of a business meeting instead of standing in some filthy room staring at her chained-up daughter. Her expression stayed completely blank as she folded her arms over her chest, almost like she was studying me.
"You're awake," she said calmly.
I stared at her.
Of all the things I thought I would feel seeing her again, relief wasn't one of them, but somehow neither was this. This cold emptiness spreading through my chest.
"You..." My voice came out rough and weak. "You did this?"
Her face didn't change.
"Obviously."
Anger hit me next, pushing through the fear so fast my chest tightened.
"You left me," I snapped, my voice shaking despite how hard I tried to steady it. "You left me there and didn't even come looking for me."
"Oh, Kelly, stop acting dramatic."
Dramatic. I actually laughed.
Not because anything was funny, but because I genuinely couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"I got kidnapped and you didn't care," I said, staring at her. "You didn't do anything."
"I had more important things to deal with rather then my slut of a daughter."
The words hit harder than I expected them to. This woman was no mother to me. I knew she wasn't a good mother. I knew that years ago. I knew it when she chose business over birthdays and meetings over me and disappeared for days at a time without caring where I was, and then she disappeared for good.
"You've always been weak," she continued casually, taking a few slow steps closer. "You were emotional, soft, always wanting things that had no value in our world. You never understood how any of this works and you never wanted to." She seethed. "You were always a disappointment." She continued.
The room suddenly felt even smaller and my throat tightened painfully.
I stayed silent, not knowing what to say, knowing there was no point.
"You know your new little boyfriend should be here any minute." She mocked whilst removing the chains from my hands. I winced at the stinging sensation. "I have eyes everywhere, daughter."
"You don't get to call me that." I spat as she griped my already burning hands and dragged me up.
"You know, I think I might actually have some use for you now."
Fear curled immediately through my stomach.
"What does that mean?"
A smile slowly spread across her face and I immediately hated it.
"It means that my men have been very curious about you."
My entire body went still.
"No."
She looked almost amused.
"I don't exactly need you for business anymore and you've already proven you're useless for everything else, so perhaps you'll finally serve some purpose."
Panic exploded through me instantly and before I could think, before logic could catch up with instinct, my eyes dropped to the gun sitting against her side.
Everything after that happened quickly.
I threw myself forward and ripped it from her waistband, stumbling backwards with shaking hands as I pointed it at her chest while my entire body trembled violently.
For the first time since waking up, her expression changed. For the first time, she looked surprised.
"Stay away from me," I whispered.
Then something hard slammed into the side of my head.
Pain exploded through me instantly and the gun fell from my hand before I even realised what happened. My knees gave out beneath me and suddenly the floor rushed upward as voices blurred together around me, my vision flickering violently while blood dripped somewhere beside me.
The last thing I remember before darkness swallowed me completely was hearing gunshots somewhere far away.
Then nothing at all.
