Kelly's POV:

Morning came too quickly.

Or maybe I just never really slept.

I stared at the ceiling, the soft light spilling in through the tall windows of the room Cade makes me hide away in—my room, apparently. The sheets still smelled faintly unfamiliar, everything about this place too polished, too controlled... too his.

And all I could think about was last night.

The way he looked at me.

The way I didn't move.

The way I didn't say I hated him—not in a way that mattered. I groaned softly, dragging a hand over my face.

"Get a grip, Kelly," I muttered to myself.

He kidnapped you. That should've been enough.

It was enough.

So why—

A sharp knock at the door snapped me out of my thoughts and before I could respond, it opened.

Of course it did. Cade didn't wait for permission.

He stepped inside like he owned the air I was breathing which, considering everything, he probably thought he did. Dressed in black, sleeves rolled just enough to show his veiny forearms, he looked like he hadn't slept either.

But somehow, it only made him more dangerous.

"Good morning," he said, his voice calm, controlled.

Like last night hadn't happened.

Like nothing had shifted between us.

I pushed myself up against the headboard, crossing my arms and covering more of my body with the sheets. "Do you always just walk into people's rooms, or am I getting special treatment?"

His gaze flicked over me briefly—too briefly—but I felt it anyway.

"You're getting special treatment."

"Lucky me." I whispered. I am getting too cocky when I absolutely should not be.

He stepped further into the room, closing the door behind him with a quiet click that felt louder than it should have.

"You didn't try to run again," he noted.

"Disappointed?" I shot back.

"No," he said simply. "Relieved."

That caught me off guard.

I frowned slightly. "Why?"

His eyes met mine, something unreadable flickering behind them.

"Because I'd rather you not test my patience this early in the day."

My stomach tightened.

Right. There it was. The reminder of exactly who he was.

Pushing the covers off and standing, even though I was very aware of how close he was to the bed. "I'm not planning any dramatic escapes before breakfast."

"Good," he replied.

I hesitantly brushed past him, my heart already pounding heading toward the window just to put some distance between us.

Bad idea because I could feel him turn, feel his attention follow me.

It was like being watched by something that didn't miss a single detail.

"What now?" I asked, crossing my arms again as I faced him. "Do I just... sit here all day? Stare at the walls? Wait for my captor to schedule me in?"

His lips twitched slightly.
