The sun, the biggest star that Kenzo can see in the sky, was harsh. Beaming down rays of heat, making the definition of a hot summer day in Japan, but that didn't matter. Kenzo was excited, small legs kicking back and forth in an attempt to do something that wasn't to sit and wait. It was as if the weather itself was sharing Kenzo's excitement. Oh and what a wonderful day it was! Kenzos cheeks began to hurt with how much she was smiling. Today Kenzo would find out her quirk, and Kenzo knows it will be powerful. How could it not be? With her father being so smart and her mother being so strong, Kenzo knows she will be the perfect mix of both! Her father says so, and father is never wrong!
Kenzo couldn't help but imagine all the things she would do with her quirk. Just like all those shows about heroes beating up the bad guys and surrounded by friends, would she be like that too? The thought brought out a giggle from her lips, she quickly put her hand to her mouth as soon as she did though, looking up at her father who was focused on driving. Kenzo was told to stay quiet and to not make a sound while on the way to the doctor. She made sure that when she swung her feet back and forth that neither touched the car cushion as to truly be quiet. She wanted to lean forward to look at her mom, who was sitting in the front seat next to her father with her head down, however Kenzo knows that if she did then not only would that make the cushions make that weird sound that leather seats make, but her neck would brush up against the seat buckle, and that always made Kenzo feel like gagging even though she never did.
Kenzo decided that sitting as straight as she could was the best option, not leaning back onto the hot leather seat, for Kenzo knew that if she did then her back would get sweaty and her white dress shirt would get stuck to her back. Looking outside as Kenzo swung her body back and forth as quietly as she could, Kenzo couldn't help but wonder back to her quirk.
What could it be? Was the main question, However others plagued her mind. What if she has a weak quirk and disappointed father? Kenzo didn't want to think about it too much but her head betrayed her. Her father was a busy man Kenzo knew, or at least that's what Kenzos mom always says when he can't play heroes with them. He always said that she had to be better than him, that she was going to be powerful. Kenzo had always thought that would be pretty difficult, after all, father is never wrong and Kenzo always is.
As Kenzo drowned in her thoughts, slowly becoming more anxious than excited, her legs slowing to a stop, the car door opened.
Kenzo's mother was always so pretty, Kenzo thought. Her long stark white hair and pale complexion paired with her eclectic blue eyes made her the most beautiful woman in the world to Kenzo. Kenzo held in a sneeze as white hair tickled her nose, Kenzo's mother closing the car door behind her with one hand while supporting Kenzos body with the other.
Kenzo never really remembered the halls they went down when she looked back on the event, too busy playing with her mothers hair and wondering how it smelled so strongly of flowers. That and perhaps the events that followed were just simply something Kenzo didn't want to remember.
A nice lady greeted Kenzo's father and showed them to an examination room. Kenzo's mother set her down, making sure the red bow on her neck wasn't messed up. The X-ray itself took around fifteen minutes that Kenzo didn't care to remember. Only that the beeping sounds that sometimes went off during it were a bit too loud, for the most part finding out what Kenzo's quirk was anticlimactic. Kenzo didn't even know why they were looking at her bones, after all neither of Kenzo's parents had a quirk that affected them physically.
Afterwards Kenzo was sat in a chair and given a lolly pop, one of the sweets Kenzo's father never allowed her to eat. Kicking her legs back and forth, Kenzo couldn't figure out what was taking them so long. Did she have an ugly quirk? Or was it a really scary one and they were so scared they couldn't muster the courage to come out and talk to her?
"Quirkless," The woman said.
"What?" Kenzo's mother asked with a broken voice. The nice lady from before sighed with closed eyes and slumped shoulders, as if what she was saying was some sort of tragedy.
"Your daughter is quirkless," the woman repeated. "What do you-"
Kenzo wasn't listening anymore, stock still with her hands gripping the sleeves of her dress shirt. A sinking feeling came upon her at that moment, one that Kenzo hadn't felt before as her breath calmed. It wasn't a panic attack Kenzo knew. Panic attacks meant panic after all, yet Kenzo felt nothing at all. She couldn't hear anything, just a slight ringing in her ears. Kenzo couldn't move, only feeling the slight swing of her feet, only seeing the tile floor and her black mary jane shoes. Suddenly everything didn't seem real anymore, just... shapes, and suddenly everything seemed to be just as important as the tile floor her feet swang over, suddenly everything was nothing at all. It was a numb feeling, not feeling anything at all and with a morbid thought Kenzo realized that someone could cut off her feet and she wouldn't care. This hospital could blow up with everyone and her inside and Kenzo wouldn't feel a thing.
Kenzo didn't notice her mother pick her up, Kenzo didn't feel her mothers chewed up nails dig into her skin, nor did Kenzo feel the leather of the car seat as her mother slammed the door, not bothering to buckle her into her seat.
"I'm disappointed in you."
And suddenly Kenzo could feel again. "What?" Nobody answered. "What do you mean?" Kenzo asked, looking at her father, eyes too dry to be watery. Nobody answered. It was a quiet car ride back home, it was almost exactly the same as the one to the hospital. The radio wasn't on. The sun, the biggest star Kenzo could see, was beaming down hot rays of light, making it the definition of a hot summer day in japan. Someone was walking their dog, someone was just getting off work, today is someone's birthday today, and today a kid around Kenzos age just found out what their quirk was.
And Kenzo couldn't stop smiling.
