‘Tom, I’m just going to the dressing room backstage, why can’t you just stay here?’ I was practically pleading with him.
I wanted to go back and speak to one of the dancers, Susie, who I had already decided I wanted to offer a job. I was going to wait to tell her after the show still, but I wanted to see how she was feeling going into a show like this. If it was making her panic and she completely flopped I would have to rethink my options.
‘Fine, I’ll go and take my seat now then.’ he eventually agreed, kissing me on the cheek, ‘But Jeff is going with you.’
‘No, he’s not. Jeff it sat in the front row to the right of the stage, Bill is to the left, and you’re next to my Aunt right in the middle. See, I thought of these things and knew you’d get funny about it again so I have it all planned so you can relax a little.’
Tom smiled and let out a small chuckle, saying ‘I love you so much’, and he kissed me firmly on the lips before walking away to sit central to the stage.
I headed out the back to see the dancers all changed into their first costumes. We had given the show a theme of ‘A Night at the Movies’ with each dance being to a theme song from a film or telling the story, including The Hunger Games, Walk the Line, and The Conjuring, which mainly revolved around the creepy doll used in the film Annabelle. We had debated putting Avengers Assemble in the mix, but we just couldn’t come up with anything good enough so we cut it. Plus, I didn’t know what Tom would think of it.
I eventually found Susie, who seemed to be very confident about her upcoming performance. She was dressed as Katniss Everdeen ready to take the lead role in the opening dance. I moved around chatting to everyone, with only five minutes before the show started.
My Aunt had offered to do the opening speech on stage to introduce the show, with me doing the closing when we were finished. Everyone was stretching backstage when I slipped into the empty dressing room to get myself changed. Because I had been so busy overseeing the show I had only put myself in one dance, which was based around the dance film Honey. It was very different to the last one I had shown Tom, and I hadn’t shared what I was doing, so he was in for a surprise. I only had to change my long, floaty vest for a cropped black one and I was ready.

I heard my Aunt speaking on stage about how this dance school had been a long time coming and how we hoped to inspire the next generation of dancers. There were a lot of teenage girls in the audience, so I was hoping they would be enrolling if we did a good enough job.
‘So, we present to you ‘A Night at the Movies’. Enjoy.’ I heard my Aunt finish as the clapping followed her off of the stage.
A few moments later the music kicked in and the girls included in The Hunger Games piece when on. They were incredible, much better than the rehearsals. They really upped their game in front of a crowd.
Four more dances followed, finishing with a solo by a lovely young girl, Tia, who performed The Bodyguard, before there was a short interval.
Tom popped backstage to see me quickly, and say how well it was going so far and how he’d heard some girls talking about how they’d love to come to a club here.

There were four dances to the second half of the show, with me on second with three other girls. Once the girls on stage finished performing the story of Mean Girls it was time for us to go on.
