I got dressed in the nicest outfit I had with me, which was a loose white blouse with black polka dots that I tucked in to my black skinny jeans and wore with a pair of black wedged ankle boots. I did my make-up using some of the tips the girls had taught me the night before, and I loosely curled my hair. I grabbed my black leather jacket and my handbag and went to meet Tom in the lobby, as arranged.
When I got down to the reception area Tom was waiting near the front desk, eyes fixed of the elevator, obviously waiting for me to come down. I walked over to him with a smile.
‘Good news is there are no photographers here,’ Tom beamed back at me, ‘but there have been a few girls in here wandering around who they think might have known we were staying here so the manager has offered to take us round the back to James who is waiting for us, just in case.’
I nodded. I was relieved to hear there wasn’t anybody around, and I felt myself relax a little more. We were lead to the back door where James was waiting to greet us.
‘So here’s the plan,’ Tom said as we pulled away from the hotel, ‘I thought we could go and get some lunch at this lovely tapas place at London Bridge and then take a walk around and see some of the sights.’
‘That sounds perfect,’ I managed to smile.
Although it sounded like a wonderful day to spend with him, I couldn’t fight this horrible feeling of what could happen while we were out and about. I know Tom had said he would keep me safe from it all, and that did make me feel a lot better about the whole possible situation, but I was still worried. I had never had to face anything like this before, when I was teaching six year old children in a little school in my home town, single and just getting by on my own in my little apartment.
My phone buzzed inside my bag during the car journey. I checked it to see a text message from Dani.
‘It’s Dani, just checking I’m alright and whether I’m home yet.’ I tell Tom, as I type out a reply telling her I’m fine and save with Tom, going to lunch at London Bridge and then for a walk.
‘It’s nice that you have a friend that worries about how you are,’ Tom said taking my hand as I placed my phone back inside my handbag.
‘Dani’s lovely. I’ve only been working with her for a few months but lately she’s become really chatty and seems like she’s happy working with me in the classroom.’
‘Possibly a lifelong friend then?’
‘Possibly,’ I smile.
We arrived at the tapas restaurant, it was almost one o’clock and although it was pretty cold the sun was out. We were seated at a table towards the back of the restaurant, as requested by Tom. I guess he thought that would put me at ease a little more, knowing we were out of the way and a bit more secluded from the other customers.
Tom ordered a selection of dishes from the menu for us to share, as I didn’t know what was good. It all looked and tasted delicious when it arrived too, so Tom had chosen well. We ate bread with oil and balsamic vinegar, apple and blue cheese salad, pan fried sea bass, goats cheese wrapped in spinach leaves and a selection of spicy coated vegetables.
