‘Why?’ I asked, still trying to process what I had just heard, ‘It can’t be you, it just can’t be.’
‘Sounds like I did a very good job then! You really thought it was Dani?’ she chuckled.
‘Yes, but she’s been acting so strange lately, so secretive.’
‘That’s why she was an easy one to use.’
I can feel my heart thumping like it is trying to escape from my chest. I breathe in deeply and try to regulate it, slowly breathing in and out, trying to prevent a panic attack!
‘I don’t get it, what have you done?’ I said with my eyes closed, still focusing on my intake and exhale of breaths.
‘Everything. Everything that has happened to you since you got together with Tom. I did it all.’
I felt myself becoming hot and slightly dizzy now, leaning on the back of one of the children’s chairs for support.
‘Explain?’ I say.
‘The twitter hate campaign? I started it. The girl gang that crowded you in London? I told them where you were. The girl that pulled you by your hair and got you on the ground? I arranged that. The person who spoke to the papers about what happened to you and who you were? I did that.’
Her voice grew louder and louder with every sentence she spat out in my direction.
‘Why?’ there were tears in my eyes now, and it wasn’t because I was feeling upset. I just didn’t feel right.
At that moment I fell to the floor, everything going fuzzy around the edges and I was struggling to get my words out.
‘Why?’ Wendy laughed, ‘You do realise that I’m older than you, and closer to Tom’s age. Why not me, hey?’
Wendy pushed me further to the ground and leaned down over me, her knee digging into my ribs.
‘After those flowers and the present arrived with his name on it, I started taking a lot more interest in you.’
She pushed her knee into me a little bit harder, making me let out a moan in pain as I couldn’t manage much else.
‘I started talking to Dani more and more about you, and she let slip not long after that you were going to be attending that film premiere with him. So I got a little Twitter hate messaging going with a few of the other girls who like Tom and agreed with me. It was so simple, and the messages went flying around and soon there were loads of us joining in. I was so proud to have started off something that big.’
Her face came closer to mine, which meant I needed to close my eyes tightly. I couldn’t bear to look at her now, especially being that close up to her.
‘Then, of course, the group of girls the day after the premiere was easy. Most of them were the same girls from Twitter who had all arranged to meet up and follow you around, with a little help from me.’
