Tom took the keys from my handbag and unlocked the door to my apartment.
‘Here we go,’ he said taking my arm and leading me in to the dark hallway.
I touched the wall to the right just as I walked over the threshold to turn on the main lights.
‘Let’s get you a cup of tea and something to eat shall we?’ Tom practically sung.
I wasn’t that hungry but I decided that there really wasn’t much point in arguing with him. He would just tell me how I hadn’t eaten all day and that I needed to keep my energy levels up.
‘A cup of tea doesn’t solve everything, you know?’ I beamed up at him from my sofa that I had just sat down on.
Tom laughed in response as he filled the kettle with water and clicked it on.
‘Everything is better with tea,’ he said seriously, ‘It doesn’t solve the problems but it makes us forget them for a while.’
‘You sound so philosophical, yet you’re talking about tea.’
‘That’s the British side of me showing.’
‘I’m British and I don’t talk about tea like that.’
We laughed, and he was right. Drinking tea whilst talking to Tom about things, besides the events of the last couple of days, did make me feel better. I spoke to him through the opening to my kitchen as Tom prepared something for us to eat. Considering I had very little in my cupboards and the fridge he did a very good job of mixing up a simple, but lovely, risotto.
After we had eaten we sat down together on the sofa with the television on, although we weren’t really watching it as we were chatting away. Eventually I decided to ask a question that had been in the back of my mind since I woke up.
‘Do you think I should give Dani a call? I feel terrible for the things I said about her. I know I didn’t say them directly to her, but if she had been in school yesterday I might have done.’
Tom stared blankly at me and then looked down into his lap.
‘What’s the matter?’ I asked.
Tom looked back up to meet my gaze.
‘I’ve spoken to her,’ he said quickly, like he really wanted to get that off of his chest as soon as possible.
‘What? When?’ I questioned.
‘At the hospital. She came to see ask how you were.’
‘How did she know I was at the hospital?’
‘She didn’t know you were there. She was just passing.’
Now I was really confused. What would she have been doing at the hospital if she didn’t even know I’d been admitted there?
