'And the tears come streaming down your face, when you lose something, you can't replace'
"She's so beautiful," Katie cooed over her best friend's baby as she held her close.
Jenna put a hand on Katie's shoulder as she looked over at her daughter. "I'm so glad you and Lance are both here. We never get to hang out with both of you."
"He's always working," Katie said as she looked at her friend before returning her gaze to the precious little bundle in her arms. "It's nice to get to spend time together and with everyone else."
"Seems like it worked out well, the birth of Millie and Lance being home, it's perfect. I knew choosing you and him to be Godparents was the right choice. I can see from the way you hold her." Katie listened to the lovely words, not looking up from the small baby she held. "You and Lance need to find time to have a little one now. Maybe you could convince him that you could look after a baby whilst he's away; afterall, we are all here for you."
Katie swallowed hard as tears filled her eyes. She couldn't speak at this moment in time; she wasn't too sure what to say in reply. Her only response was to nod in reply.
Jenna moved her hand before sitting next to Katie. "I can't wait for you to have a baby. Can you imagine," Jenna said as she dreamily thought about the future. "You, me, Carly and Dawn, all hanging out, coffee whilst the babies play, sleepovers, holidays, it will be amazing."
In her mind, all Katie could do was scream. She didn't know how to react; she blinked back the tears that threatened to spill from her eyes before she looked up. "Hopefully soon," the words were hard to say as she moved slightly to hand the baby back to her friend. "I better find Lance," Katie smiled as she placed the baby into Jenna's arms.
"Lance is probably with Jack," Jenna told her friend as she cradled her daughter. "If you pass by the bar, bring me back a white wine, please. I'm so glad I'm not breastfeeding."
Katie let out a small chuckle, a fake laugh, before she walked away. Her heart was breaking inside her chest; her hands were shaking as she walked towards the bar, hoping to see Lance somewhere. She whipped her head around a few times before she spotted him standing around the pool table with a few of the guys. She didn't want to put any stress on him, but she also wanted to be close to him right now.
She walked towards him; it was a few seconds before he clocked her, his eyes meeting hers. He walked towards her, his eyebrows furrowed as they met in the middle. "You okay, babe?" Lance was concerned about her as he put his hands on her arms as he stared into her eyes. "Katie?"
"I'm being silly," she wrapped her arms around his neck as she got closer to him, trying to play it off casually. "It's just this," Katie sighed as she put her face into his neck, shielding herself from the world.
Lance stroked her hair as he held her close. "I know, baby." He knew how much today was killing Katie.
Five years, they had been married five years. In those years, they had tried, really they had, but they hadn't managed to have a baby. Lance was well aware of how it took its toll on Katie; during that time, she'd suffered 4 miscarriages and disappointment after disappointment every time they hoped she was pregnant.
"One day you'll be a great dad," she mumbled into his neck as she felt the tears fall from her eyes. It was hard for her, she wanted to assure Lance she was there for him, but she was suffering herself.
He pulled away from her; he cupped her face before using his thumbs to wipe her tears away. "I promise, one-day things will work out for us." He told his wife.
Lance knew he needed to be strong for her. Every second of heartbreak was too much. He saw her at her weakest, and all he wanted to do was wrap his arms around her and keep her in a bubble. He hoped he was right; he hoped that they would finally one day find their happy ending, but for now, together, they could choose this ending.
Katie looked up into his eyes, her own watering around as she smiled at him. They both knew it wasn't a real smile. They both knew the heartbreak behind the smile. "Can we just go home, please?" Katie asked as Lance held both her hands.
"If that's what you want," he said as he nodded.
She nodded in return, "Please."
