"Len! Len!!" Someone called.
"Len! Let's play a game later! I'm sure I'll beat you this time!!" Someone said.
"Len! Look at this frog! Isn't it cool?" Someone cheered.
"Len! I'll see you later!!" Someone promised.
"Len... Your parents have passed away." Someone explained.
"Len!!! Did you eat my sandwich?!?!" Someone yelled.
"Len???" Someone screamed.
"Len!!? Why did you do this?!" Someone cried.
The air became a cacophony of people saying various words, with just one in common.
"LEN."
Len opened his eyes and gasped for air.
The blinding whiteness of this new environment took him by surprise.
An empty white void seemed to extend infinitely in every direction.
"Am I... dead?" Len wondered.
Len took a good look around.
"Hmm." He thought. "I always thought the void after death would be darker."
Len felt dizzy and exhausted. He was in no position to get up and explore.
"No demons... no Voice... no urges." He thought.
Crap. All the memories of his last day flooded back to him.
The need to harm himself began to fester.
"Oh. Now there's urges. But at least there's no-"
"Heeeey. What's up, it's me!"
"STOP!!" Len yelled. "Why are you being comedic? Since when were you funny? You're screwing with me!"
The voice chuckled.
"Come on kid, you're dead. Might as well live a little!!!"
Len remembered the promise. THE promise. The whole reason why he's dead, why he's here, why everything in the past couple months had happened in the first place.
"WHERE IS MY ETERNAL PEACE AND JOY???" Len cried.
"Here. Duh." The voice responded, almost sarcastically.
"You said that I could have eternal peace and joy if I killed enough people!! I did it!! You saw it all!!" Len desperately shouted.
"You wanted it, and you got it, right here." The voice groaned.
"I am NOT feeling any peace or joy in the slightest!!" Len screamed at the top of his lungs.
The voice sighed. "I did NOT think I had to spell it out for you, idiot.
Look. White room. Literally no one around. No one who wants you to do anything, no one to expect anything from you, you can just sit here and rot away until the end of time. Kinda like you did in your room when you were alive."Len found a small bit of solace with these words.
But the self harm urges were getting stronger.
"Then explain the urge to cut myself. This is not peace or joy." Len questioned.
"You're human. It's a terrible limitation, and habits don't die with your mortal body. Your soul may be dark, disgusting, horrible, and absolutely rotten, but your human instinct is still there. The small bit you didn't kill off yourself, anyway." The voice answered.
This response seemed like a genuine answer, so Len was satisfied.
----------
Len wanted to enjoy his newfound peace and joy, so he took a nap, like the typical teenage boy.
At least, he tried.Sleeping proved difficult, since the void was so bright in all directions.
It was like shining a flashlight up to your eyelids while you closed them... light still shone through. It was migraine inducing.
Len was fed up at this point. All he wanted to do was take a good nap. He couldn't while he was alive, and now he can't even rest in his death.
His eyes hurt, which eventually caused a headache.Len sighed. "This is ridiculous. I can't even rest after I die?"
The voice scoffed. "Maybe try closing your eyes? Isn't that the point of the skin over your eyeballs?"
Len was so insulted by this remark that exploded with fury.
"THE LIGHT STILL SHINES THROUGH!!!" He screamed so loud that his voice became hoarse.
"Oh. How stupid. Humans have to worry about the dumbest things." The voice responded.
Len could not bear this anymore. He didn't really know what he had expected with this promise of "peace and joy," but it was certainly not this.
As Len laid on the floor, he noticed something peculiar about it.
"Wait a minute." Len said as he pressed his hands on the floor. "This material feels so familiar. I just can't put my finger on it..."
"What?" The voice sounded confused. "Aren't you literally putting your fingers on it right now?"
Len found this funny. "It's an expression. It means that I can't identify why something is so familiar."
The voice was not amused. "Humans just need to say what they mean to say. Once I heard a human say that she was going to kill her friend, but she didn't! And I got all excited to watch it, but for nothing."
Len understood the sentiment. "I remember that back when I was a kid, I didn't get most expressions either. Some people just acted so weird around me, and I never understood why."
Len looked around at the white void again. "I guess I never will." He sighed."I never asked about you." The voice dryly said.
"You're a loser."Len just silently agreed.
