Edward's not exactly eager to return to work. There isn't a lot worth returning to. He makes small talk with Emmett and Jasper, he looks over previous cases and waits for new ones, and he stares blankly into space when those, inevitably, don't work.

"C'mon, bro, I'm sure he'll be fine." Emmett eventually starts, sauntering over from his desk to bother Edward.

It was easy to say that, but it wasn't easy to guarantee it. If some hot shot strolls into the station and solves the unsolvable, Jacob could be applying for another job soon.

"Right." Edward sighs out, fiddling with a pen that was sitting on his desk.

He can tell when Emmett turns to Jasper looking for some kind of help by the exasperated sigh that leaves his lips.

"Maybe we can help him solve the case." Jasper supplies and Emmett stares at him for a long moment before turning back to Edward. He's clearly trying to figure out what the hell they were thinking.

"Wouldn't that put us at risk?" Emmett tries to remind the both of them.

"Not if it doesn't lead back to us." Edward supplies. "It would be better if we were in front of the case and not behind it."

Edward looks up at Emmett and he knows he's pulling out all of the stops with his pleading gaze. Emmett only lets out another sigh, probably regretting speaking in the first place.

"Fine, but no getting caught at any crime scenes before they're deemed as such," he calls over his shoulder, "and no telling Officer Idiot anything!"

Edward's so enthralled in his work that he almost forgets to head to get coffee. Jasper's the one who reminds him that he hadn't taken a break. He reluctantly steps away from the little bit of information that he'd managed to dig up in the past three hours to slowly make his way to the break room.

Edward is curious, sure, but he really doesn't want to cement the reality that Jacob has been replaced. He takes his time getting his coffee, waiting for Newton to make an appearance. When he looks up and out of the plexiglass window into the meeting room, he can see Newton watching him from the outside.

They make it through an eighth of the work before Emmett's stretching his arms.

"Well, I should be getting home to the Missus." He proclaims before smacking them both on the back and going to grab his stuff.

"I think I'm gonna stay here for a while -" Edward's cut off by Emmett, as he turns back around.

"No, you're going to head home to the detective so that he doesn't get suspicious." He informs him.

"Why would working be suspicious?" Edward asks, looking down at his gloved hands.

"You've been late for work twice this week and yesterday you went home early," Emmett reminds him, "You start working too hard without a fresh body and your man waiting at home and I'd get suspicious."

"His name is Sam Uley. Big guy, overbearing."Mike says as soon as he gets a foot into the room. Jacob and Edward are perched on the bed, flipping through Edward's files. It's more of a distraction for Jacob than actually getting anything done. Mike plops into his usual seat and tosses a folder onto Jacob's lap.

"The man's a fucking nut case." He blurts after Jacob flips open the file to see the first page. It's a file on Uley. It's oddly thick for a resume. His success rate isn't as high as Jacob's, but he got his man no matter how unethical it seemed. He skirted by rules, spent the late nights looking through the evidence, and obsessed over every single piece of it. He was a fresh pair of hungry eyes.
