Jacob wakes up with a jolt. He's not sure why, not remembering any dream and not hearing any discernible noises as he groggily turns over to glance at his bedroom door that was still ajar. Mike is standing in the threshold, leaning against the frame as if he's been standing there for a while. That's when Jacob realizes that his phone is ringing.
"I called you ten times." Mike says, plopping down in his seat and ending the call so that Jacob's phone would stop buzzing on the nightstand. He doesn't sound bitter about the fact that Jacob hadn't answered. If anything, he sounds nervous.
Jacob lets out a grunt of acknowledgement, leaning back onto the mattress. He really didn't need more bad news. He was on shaky ground as it was.
"There's been an incident..." Mike begins, and he has that look on his face that he has when he's delivering bad news to a family. His voice is soft and his eyes are pointed towards the floor. It's somber enough to where Jacob's convinced that he's just as upset as the deceased's loved ones. Jacob's not in the headspace for more heart-wrenching news. He's not sure why Mike is still updating him on the case. He's got enough on his shoulders without needing to be reminded that he can't do anything to help others. He closes his eyes as if that'd shield him from whatever it is that Mike's about to say.
"Doc was in a hunting accident." The words have Jacob's eyes flying open as he looks over at Mike, suddenly impatient for more information. He'd been so caught up in just being upset in general that he hadn't truly taken the time to think about where Edward could be. Maybe his brain had gotten a bit snappish thinking he was off with someone else, but he hadn't contemplated the where and the what he'd be doing. A hunting accident?
"The story I got from his brothers was that they were out hunting when something started chasing them. They started heading back towards the road and his leg got caught in a bear trap." Mike says, shifting in his seat, "It's not as bad as it could've been, Jay. He's alive and at the hospital getting bandaged up."
Jacob opens his mouth to ask questions, before closing it to replay the scenario in his head.
"What was chasing them?" He finally spits out.
"Jasper and Emmett say they didn't see anything. Edward is on some strong meds so we decided to wait to question him." Mike admits.
Jacob wants to go and see him. Even when trying to squash how anxious he feels, he won't be able to sleep tonight if he doesn't go and see him.
"I have to go back up to the hospital with Uley." Mike admits, head somehow hanging even lower.
Jacob's about to dismiss whatever guilt he was feeling when Leah pushes open the door.
"So, we going or what?" Seth asks from over her shoulder.
Edward wakes up in a hospital bed. His leg wrapped in a thick cast and elevated. His head feels hazy, his movements sluggish as he tries to take in his surroundings. He peers around the room, eventually catching the eyes of a nurse who's holding a clipboard to her chest.
"Do you feel like talking to anyone?" Are the first words that are able to penetrate Edward's foggy brain. Talk to anyone? Maybe Emmett and Jasper are out in the waiting room.
He gives her a nod that makes his head swim.
He's expecting Emmett to burst through the room, exaggeratedly expressing how upset he is that Edward had gotten hurt. Instead, he's met with Sam Uley sauntering in, Newton trailing close behind him. The officer looks apologetic, keeping his eyes downcast to the floor.
"Dr. Cullen," Detective Uley starts, and Edward immediately regrets agreeing to see anyone, "can you describe to me what happened?"
He's a fairly large guy with a deep voice and dark eyes. He seems to be trying his hardest to be less intimidating than his photos as he lowers his shoulders and gives the ghost of a smile. He's not exactly someone that Edward wants to wake up to. It didn't feel like something he should be waking up to.
